India has been exploring options to strengthen its air power, including discussions around potential Su-57 production in India through Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). Any engagement with Rostec, a sanctioned entity, could invite secondary sanctions—impacting trade, technology transfers, and defence cooperation with the U.S. The irony is hard to miss. While India deepens defence ties with Washington, buying drones, helicopters, and relying on U.S. engines for platforms like HAL Tejas, the same partner is using sanctions as leverage to block India’s options elsewhere. India has resisted CAATSA pressure before, most notably during the S-400 deal with Russia. The renewed Su-57 warning shows that the U.S. sanctions playbook remains active, even amid trade celebrations. In short, as India shakes hands with Washington on trade, CAATSA is being quietly placed on the table. The coming months will test whether partnership with the U.S. allows strategic autonomy, or comes with red lines drawn in sanctions ink.
