My definition of democracy: Democracy isn't a system for selecting good leaders. #Democracy is a system for removing unpopular leaders with the least amount of bloodshed possible.

@nytimes @thetimes Check this out! He swam 90 days. 468 hours. 1367 kilometres. From Waikuku Beach, North Cape all the way to Te-Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington. All for a healthy ocean and to call for an end to bottom trawling 🌊 Jono’s swim ranks among the toughest endurance feats in the world, and it’s expected to be ratified as the longest unassisted staged swim ever. No wetsuit, just togs, swim cap and goggles. Jono Ridler and Live Ocean will return to Parliament on Wednesday, 29 April to formally handover the petition calling on the New Zealand Government to end bottom trawling on all seamounts – at home and in the high seas by the end of 2027 – and to activate a quick transition away from bottom trawling entirely.

@Charteddaily Interesting that other OECD countries have trended upwards just at slower rates from around the same time. Health outcomes and longer lifespans improving over this time as well maybe?

On this day in 1991, my photopolarimeter subsystem (PPS) was turned off due to degraded performance, saving 2.4 W of power. The PPS was used to measure surface texture and composition, particle size distribution and composition in ring systems, and to study scattering and density of atmospheres. The PPS was a 15 cm telescope with three polarizing filters as well as eight color filters, followed by a photomultiplier tube to amplify the dim conditions. Voyager 1's photomultiplier tube failed in November 1979 after the Jupiter encounter, and so the V1 PPS was never used again. All other Voyager PPS data therefore comes from Voyager 2. Forty filter combinations were used in 24 second sequences using 400 ms exposures and 200 ms filter change timings. These filter sequences allowed amounts and states of Na, H, He, Ca, CO, O, Mg, Si, K, and CH3 to be derived, as well as scale heights in atmospheres.

Dear all, My new friend, Tony Mochama, (an amazing Kenyan writer) and I are writing a book called Why the World Fell Out of Love with America. Tony grew up in Kenya, and I grew up in the Soviet Union, but we were both completely under the spell of the USA for the longest time ever. Probably you know what I mean. The book is a story of love and divorce (from a nation we once adored). It will try to document the pulse of how these feelings changed, but not only for us, but for the rest of the world. The book is woven from private experiences, recollections, diary entries written across the span of our lives, and bridged by larger concept essays. What we are looking for is to include short fragments from people we know — people from different parts of the world, different generations, different relationships to America - and its seductive mythology. Not an interview in the formal sense. Just a small piece of memory or feeling: how America shaped your inner world, and what happened to those feelings over time. It’s a bitter story, in some ways. But it’s also a beautiful one, and an important one. It can be a single scene. It can be a few pages, capturing the personal arc of your 'feelings' journey with America ( from illusion to disillusionment). It can be something you’ve already written somewhere — a note, an old email, a line from something. Or something entirely new, as you read this! Thank you all in advance. Hopefully it would be a fun project. Please, write to contact@davidgraber.org

what for others are oscars and gold lions, for me are criminal cases from putin's Russia. I just got indicted in a brand new criminal case - violating the "foreign agent" law and placed on yet another Russia's wanted list. criminal cases appear when i do something sensitive for the Kremlin. in 2012, it was calling out putin's and the Patriarch's bs, after which the Cathedral of Christ the Savior was renamed the Pussy Riot Church. in 2023, it was Putin's Ashes exhibited at the world's top gallery. in 2026, what is it? the fact that the Russian pavilion at the Venice Biennale is already nicknamed the "Pussy Riot Pavilion"? our recruitment campaign for Russians to join the Ukrainian military? Pussy Riot occupying Ubiquiti's hq? official Russia being kicked out of The Council of Europe, and us - foreign agents, traitors, wh**es - speaking from its tribune instead? idk idk p.s. it's sweet to look at putin's clerks announcing your indictment while petting your dog. for thousands of Ukrainians and Russians kept in putin's GULAG atm the reality is much grimer.

"The US-Israel war on Iran has not only produced a military stalemate but also undermined the credibility of the US sanctions regime by demonstrating again that the US is bound to yield the moment energy prices risk rising at home, particularly ahead of the elections."
Alicia GarciaHerrero 艾西亞@Aligarciaherrer

Sharing an article which I'm co-authored with Elina Ribakova @elinaribakova published by Peterson Institute for International Economics @PIIE : "How #Russia and #China are winning the war in #Iran". "The expanding war in Iran is disrupting, if not devastating, the global economy. Meanwhile, the sound of silence from normally voluble leaders of China and Russia is telling. From their point of view, silence is the best way for them to let Washington entangle itself in a protracted war in the Middle East, opening space to expand the influence of President Vladimir Putin of Russia in Europe and for President Xi Jinping of China in the Indo-Pacific. Iran’s strategy of closing the Strait of Hormuz using naval mines, coastal missile batteries, and drone swarms is holding the global economy hostage as energy prices have surged. If the US plan with Iran was to mirror the Venezuela playbook by achieving a swift, overwhelming action to remove a perceived threat and declare victory, it has backfired horribly. Meantime, China and Russia are sitting on the sidelines. Why? China is dependent on Iran, which supplies 13 percent of China’s oil imports at discounted prices. Since 2021, Iran has been locked into a 25-year cooperation agreement with Beijing, securing $400 billion of oil at below-market prices in exchange for Chinese investment and security cooperation. Russia, for its part, has relied on Iran as its most important Middle Eastern partner since Western sanctions on Russia began in 2014. Both countries had been propping up Tehran financially, militarily, and diplomatically for years. Yet their response to the strikes amounts to little more than condemnations of the US. One would expect more from Moscow and Beijing. But their muted response is not a mistake. It is a strategic calculation: why interrupt a war waged by the US as it is getting stuck in an expensive quagmire in the Middle East? Both Russia and China are benefiting from this war in many ways." piie.com/blogs/realtime…

Some thoughts for @CNBC International: "Markets reacted negatively because, while #Trump says it is nearly over, he is sending the third aircraft carrier and more troops to the region so it is hard to believe his words. I think a further escalation is still the more likely scenario." cnbc.com/2026/04/02/tru…

Israel has passed a law to execute Palestinian detainees. Death by hanging. Mandatory sentencing. No pardon. 90 days to kill them. It applies through military courts - 97.5% conviction rate. Doesn't apply to Israelis. Horrific apartheid - worse than South Africa. Silence
