The Treasury Committee is reviewing whether the student loan system is fair and wants to hear from doctors and medical students. But you only have a short window to tell them what it’s actually like. Doctors are often hit harder by student loans due to longer training and delayed earnings. Successive governments have taken the politically expedient option of expanding medical school places without investment in medical academics, placement capacity and postgraduate training opportunities.

We have heard repeated concerns from medical students’ that the significant expansion in medical school places is affecting their educational experience and their future career prospects.

The BMA is working with Kent and Medway Medical School, Public Health Experts and students to ensure medical students are protected during the ongoing Meningitis outbreak in Kent. Please continue to follow advice given by the Medical School, as well as the UKHSA.

Student finance is landing this week, but for many medical students, the struggle continues.  Longer courses, sky-high rent, and limited work options mean some are skipping essentials and falling into debt just to stay in medicine.

In our countdown to 2026 we’re running through some of our campaign highlights. The amazing work of our @BMAStudents has highlighted how being a medical student has now become unaffordable – forcing many to drop out of uni all together.

Residents have spoken. Students: Support them! Strikes will go ahead on the 17th-22nd of December after resident doctors in England overwhelmingly reject @wesstreeting's offer. 83.2% (29,215) voted against the offer.

There is a feeling amongst my colleagues that they have been let down - that the promise of a well-paid, secure and enjoyable job for life isn't the reality. I don't regret my decision, but I'm not sure I would make the same one again. theguardian.com/commentisfree/… @devisridhar
