With things so awful in the world, it seems weird to be writing about #vangogh & events of 130+ years ago. VG's arrival in Arles was yesterday in 1888. Those first few hours would shape his life in the city which historians have misunderstood. It's all about 'how you start- no?

I cannot believe Avis' reply... So far I have had eleven messages asking for the same thing- numbers, dates, rental name etc- all of which have been provided. This is incompetence and doesn't endear me to the car rental company. One contact person and no CG messages- please!..

@BMurphyProvence Hi. We are so sorry to hear about your experience! Please DM us your reservation or rental agreement number, and name on the rental, and we will be happy to look into this for you! Hope to hear from you soon! ~HP twitter.com/messages/compo…

As I'm fighting with 80 institutions at the moment trying to get authoristaions for illustrations at the moment this was most welcome. Time for some form of concertation internationally about fees charged to illustrate academic arguments. It's horribly expensive. #freeimages

Image fees - more good news: Tate will start removing Creative Commons licences from their non-copyright artworks online. This means that potentially thousands of images of some of the greatest British art will finally be clearly in the public domain, and free to re-use. 1/3

I am having an issue with @Avis. I can't believe is that people think it's ok to make a number of grammar and spelling errors in business correspondence. While I'm on my soapbox, when did it become normal to address people by their first names in a formal letter? #literacyplease

You should read my book #vangoghsear so much of what is said about #vangogh is myth or not common sense... I delved into a story by asking questions and hopefully rectified quite a few mistruths. Thank you for watching the film.

Thank you for your kind message. For the moment I haven't contacted any publishers outside of France about the book. It all takes so much time . At the moment still chasing up museums about illustrations 80 in all - so very busy. But #vangoghscafe has lots of revelations.

@BMurphyProvence @ActesSud Just finished Van Gogh's Ear and I loved it! Thank you for your hard work and engaging story. Will this #vangoghscafe be available in English?

I spoke to Gaby's family. She was 'horrified' by Van Gogh's attentions as any respectable young woman being brought an ear by a man she barely knew would be.She fainted after unwrapping the 'gift'. #vangogh later went to present his excuses but soon after was returned to hospital.

Just returned from a long drive across the Alps to see the Van Gogh show at #mudec in Milan. It was great, especially as one of the curators found time to show me the expo. Little kids were sitting on the floor surrounded by Vincent's huge colourful paintings. Joyous #vangoghsear

In this month of November, my thoughts turn to 1888 when Vincent completed his greatest number of portraits. Faces caught in time - they are the faces of our ancestors and their lives are truly incredible. #vangoghscafé will be published in late spring 2024 by @ActesSud in France

Yes, yes! Why should the royal family be exempt? If they are willing to take taxpayers' money they should open their archives to historians. This moment is comparable to the Queen finally bowing to public pressure and paying taxes. It's the decent and right thing to do.
Andrew Lownie@andrewlownie

A private archive about our national life. Who paid for the restoration of Windsor? The taxpayer. Harry can reveal the most intimate recent secrets but historians can't study files such as the privy purse from 80 years ago,

Re. the issue raised by @andrewlownie about archival restrictions, I had an interesting discussion with an archivist. Isn't it time for a more uniform attitude to archival access? Each country, each institution creates their own rules, we as researchers can only muddle through.

I was at the @vangoghmuseum in Amsterdam and saw the Van Gogh in Auvers' show. I had only ever seen a few works from this period, so radically different from Provence. I thoroughly enjoyed not only the exhibition but the scholarly catalogue as well. Fabulous #vangoghinauvers

@andrewlownie wrote eloquently in today's @DailyMailUK about the problem of getting access to restricted archives. With little or no justification, these restrictions hinder research. I was delighted that public attention has been drawn to a fundamental issue that needs sorting.

Thank you this is so kind.I have a new book coming out in France next year on the life stories of the people in VG's portraits. It's really been interesting doing this research over the past 5 years.Hopefully someone will publish it in English. But thank you this made my day.

Sadly, I heard the irrepressible #barryhumphries is unwell. I had the most wonderful experience meeting him @CharlestonTrust. What a kind, generous human. I stayed to watch his talk. There is no better public speaker, hilarious-with perfect timing.#DameEdna naughtiness we love

Naifeh & White had 20 researchers, unfortunately they used translations of the letters that were out-of-date. The book was no longer academically sound when it was published ..Much is good but VG's time in Arles is totally incorrect. PLEASE don't take it as 'fact'. #vangoghsear
john@john_down_under

@BMurphyProvence Just one of the reasons the book by Naïf and Smith should have been listed as fiction or at least speculative biography. Tremendous amount of research, though.
