Have just seen Oppenheimer. Astonishingly good. Not least the recognition of the recency of so much physics. And such poignancy. Much food for thought on the ethics of science. I’m going to recommend all my 6th formers see it.

@Hookean1 Taught filament bulbs today. Linked it to P=IV. Did a prac comparing power for filament bulbs and LEDs. Discussed why filament bulbs are so bad and why you can’t buy them. Linked to why school is installing LED lights everywhere. Linked to sustainability/power generation. 💥

UK Physics teachers and exam boards. Why are we still teaching about filament bulbs and fluorescent tubes in 2023?🤔

@Steve42089771 Contrary to others, we're not giving it. Despite the fact that I am 100% pro the equation sheet for exams. I think, in Y10, it's important that they have a good familiarity with the basic equations... We did, however, give the 'usual' ones that are on the back of the paper.

Physics mocks for Year 10. Do I give them equation sheets?

@Jono_SHJ Truthfully, no idea. But why do we require our 16 yr olds to know so much stuff? And to prove they do in such a gruelling way?

I have a daughter in Y10. It is only now becoming clear to me exactly HOW MUCH we ask of our young people doing their GCSEs. 10 subjects (ish). Hours of exams for each. So much learning for each, with real complexity in parts. All examined in a tiny window of time. Why???

Have seen yesterday’s AQA paper 1. 3 ‘tricky’ sub-questions in amongst it all. But the rest was very doable. The m/c were a gift.

@lauraewelsh @livvythepink @chancer_a That’s me! Yep; love teaching. It’s not all as bleak as it seems. Students are awesome; schools are fun; every day is different. Yes, there’s some stress and challenge, but that exists in every walk of life…

Today I had the total privilege of being the 'wing man' to a colleague as she ran an inspirational session with a gang of Y7s exploring the science and ethics of detecting exoplanets. Watching an exceptional classroom practitioner in action: balm for the soul. 😍 #lovephysics

I’ve just done this. Very worth doing. Although disappointed that it seems to have been written by the RSC. As such, there’s a big bit about what teachers would like removed from GCSE Chem, to slim it down. But no similar q for Phys (or Bio) - a glaring omission, @iopteaching
