the em dash — one of my favorite types of punctuation — requires use of an annoying special symbol in our CMS.
so if you see them in copy, know that someone — against all odds — really wanted them there.

Totally false. The news staff sat in on some interviews I did with editorial boards. At the very least, the news staff reviewed recordings of editorial board interviews. To say the fake news side works independently with the editorial board is . . . well . . . fake news
