***AN OPEN LETTER TO THE FINANCIAL TIMES*** (Please RT) Dear Financial Times @FT , May I remind you that your current tag line is 'impartial reporting, expert analysis, informed opinions'. I know this because you send me stuff every now and again, even though I don't ask for it, telling me this is the case. Could I also suggest posting it somewhere your 'journalists' can see it? Or at least drop them a line to let them know? It may help remind them what your values are and the standards you one day hope to achieve. Today, sadly, is not that day. I am referring, of course, to your recent article "Bitcoin's bounce back Deja-vu" (ft.com/content/122284…) which is, very possibly, one of the most ill-informed and badly written pieces I have ever read. That's quite the accolade by the way, as there's still plenty of competition out there, but fortunately, there's a slowly growing number of journalists who are, once again, trying that old fashioned approach of doing a little research first. There are far too many factual errors, inaccuracies and inconsistencies to even begin to go through them all, but I couldn’t help but think "Hello it's 2018 calling - can we have our arguments back?" I will highlight the obvious one that you really must get right if you want to have another go at writing a proper big boy story on #Bitcoin: #Bitcoin is not crypto, they are entirely different things. Please learn why and why you should not link the actions of an unrelated industry to a global hard currency system. #Bitcoin is not backed by nothing. That's fiat you're thinking of. #Bitcoin is backed by the absolutes of maths and the first and third laws of thermodynamics. It's pretty cool, check it out. The mess of the crypto industry (and it IS largely a mess) is to #Bitcoin as fish food is the aluminium smelting industry. You should probably check your facts here before publishing as this handy little life hack makes you look like not such a bunch of numpties. Should I go on? And yes, I know this is an opinion piece, but I still think you should still base it on actual facts, not things you heard your mates in the pub saying after a few pints of posh London lager (which, incidentally costs about 20% more than it did a couple of years ago and is, also incidentally, one of the many problems #Bitcoin solves.) Finally, just a reminder that you’re allowed to have a negative opinion on #Bitcoin - literally EVERYONE does until they understand it (myself included) but almost no-one does after they do - and it’s true to say most people still aren’t there. A bit like the internet in mid 1990’s when people like you went after people like me for me for saying it would have a profound effect on the world. At least you’ve stopped doing THAT now. Anyway, must go. Gotta keep building and developing for the next generation so that they have the tools to solve some of the world’s biggest problems of equality, poverty, war, currency devaluation and, above all, hope. Y'know, day to day stuff that #bitcoin is pretty good at.
