Exclusive interview with Andy Burnham from @patrickkmaguire * Andy Burnham will offer people “tangible” improvements to help with the cost of living as the first step in a ten-year plan to rewire Britain’s economy * On the eve of becoming Britain’s sixth prime minister in a decade, Burnham said that he wants to “draw a line” and show that it is possible “to do things in a different way” * He said the fact the tax-free personal allowance has been frozen at £12,570 for five years was “the thing I heard the most on the doorsteps” while campaigning in the Makerfield by-election * He said the issue is “lodged in my mind”. “So when people, they’re just characterising me as a tax raiser, well again it’s never that simplistic is it? The breathing space point is a really serious one. How do we just make people feel better?” *He said that he has been in talks with the Treasury over the weekend about announcements that he will make this week, suggesting that there could be immediate support for people relating to the cost of living * He is expected to announce plans to cut energy bills and reduce bus fares, with his allies discussing restoring the £2 cap on bus fares * His father, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s and is in a care home, is unaware that he is about to become prime minister. “That’s a sadness because he would be [proud],” he said. “But the way I look at it, it’s his achievement as well. A whole family achievement although he doesn’t know it.” * He said he wants to find “common ground” with his political opponents.
