I have confirmed that all of the police services of jurisdiction in the County of Elgin, St. Thomas, and London have declined to participate in the Liberal gun buyback. The St. Thomas Police Service, Aylmer Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police, and London Police Service have all been clear that law-abiding gun owners — the only people affected by the federal confiscation program — are not the problem. The illegal guns used in crime are overwhelmingly products of organized crime and cross-border smuggling. They are not the firearms responsibly owned and safely used by Canada’s licensed and rigorously vetted hunters, farmers, and sport shooters. Police chiefs and associations locally and across the country have been explicit that their resources are best deployed going after real crime and real criminals, not law-abiding gun owners. I thank our local police for their important work and leadership on this.
