This is an amazing anecdote about Allen G. Thurmond, Grover Cleveland’s aged running mate in the (failed) election of 1888. This is up there with Admiral Stockdale’s “who am I, why am I here?”. Taken from @troy_senik ‘s A MAN OF IRON, bio of Cleveland (a quite good read).

BREAKING: Just five minutes before Trump's announcement to halt the attacks on Iran, massive trades reportedly hit the market. In one move, $1.5 billion in S&P 500 (ES) futures was bought while $192 million in oil (CL) futures was sold. These orders were 4–6x larger than anything else at the time. The trader seemingly made huge gains. Unusual.

Breaking news: European countries including France have opened talks with Tehran seeking to negotiate a deal to guarantee safe passage for their ships through the Strait of Hormuz, according to people briefed on the efforts. ft.trib.al/FRDLNtv

Guys, relax, the only risk in transiting the Strait of Hormuz is that Iran will shoot a missile at your ship. Otherwise it's open for transit. An all-time quote from our Secretary of War.
