“Chase 4 units of whole blood!”
“Where is the blood?”
“Transfuse her now!”
“We need blood urgently!”
These are phrases heard almost every day in obstetric wards.
One of the leading causes of maternal death worldwide is postpartum haemorrhage (severe bleeding after childbirth). The truth is that every pregnant woman has the potential to experience this, even when the pregnancy has been completely normal.
This is why some women are advised to donate blood before delivery or arrange replacement donors.
Having blood readily available can mean the difference between life and death during an emergency.
Many people talk about “buying blood,” but blood cannot be manufactured or bought off a shelf. Blood comes from people who choose to donate.
The fees charged by blood banks are for screening, testing, processing, storage, and ensuring the blood is safe for transfusion, not for the blood itself.
Simply put: blood saves lives, but blood only comes from blood donors.
To my pregnant mothers: if your healthcare provider advises you to donate blood or secure replacement donors before delivery, please take it seriously.
To the general public: become a blood donor. Your donation could save a mother during childbirth, a child with severe anaemia, a trauma victim, or even someone you love.
You never know whose life your blood may save tomorrow.
🩸 Donate blood. Save lives.
