A basket of groceries in Istanbul is now more expensive than in the UK. I compared two online shopping baskets - 1 from Carrefour for delivery in Istanbul; one from Sainsbury's. The price of 19 basic items in the UK totalled £44.53. The price of the 19 basic items in Istanbul totalled 4,425.18 TL / £71.99 at today's exchange rate. I compared using the cheapest available options and the most similar items/quantities available. There are a few items that really push up the cost of the grocery basket in Turkey, namely beef and instant coffee (?!). Some goods such as olive oil are roughly the same price as in the UK, while some items such as eggs, milk and onions are quite a bit cheaper in Turkey. The gross minimum wage in Turkey is 33,030 (£537.88) a month. The gross minimum wage in the UK is £12.71 an hour for people over 21. Assuming a 35 hour working week, this is £444.85 a week. None of this is to say that people in the UK have it easy. I know the cost of living crisis - already years in the making and now exacerbated by the war in Iran - is hitting many people very very hard. The point I'm rather trying to make is that inflation in Turkey is crazy, pushing living costs up to levels that far outstrip what many people earn.

On April 12, Hungary held parliamentary elections, and pro-Russian Telegram channels operating across the Balkans were ready with a coordinated narrative well before the votes were counted. BIRN BiH (@detektor_ba)'s Irvin Pekmez analyzed 10 Telegram channels in Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, and Montenegro. The findings reveal a textbook information operation running in parallel with the election. I was interviewed for the publication: detektor.ba/2026/04/13/kak… Even before results came in, channels like Borbeni efektivi and Istočni front were seeding claims that Ukraine was recruiting citizens to incite post-election riots in Budapest and that EU institutions were manipulating public opinion to boost the opposition. The goal was clear: pre-delegitimize any Orbán defeat by framing it not as democracy functioning, but as Western-engineered destabilization. The "Kyiv" reference is not accidental. It is arguably the single most pre-designed narrative template in the pro-Russian propaganda toolkit, telling audiences to interpret celebrations or power transitions not as democratic outcomes, but as the opening moves of destabilization and occupation. For Balkan audiences, the Kyiv 2014 reference carries additional emotional weight given how heavily it was amplified in Serbian and Bosnian-Serb media as a cautionary tale about Western interference. After Magyar's victory, Srpski glasnik circulated a report from the Orbán-aligned broadcaster HírTV alleging that a leaked document instructed Magyar to declare victory prematurely, claim that all subsequent vote counts were fraudulent, mobilize supporters, occupy government buildings, and "turn Budapest into Kyiv." Researchers tracking the pre-election campaign flagged the document as fabricated and attributed the operation to Kremlin-linked networks. Channels Istok Info and WebTribune deliberately cropped Magyar's interview with Nepszava, extracting only his acknowledgment that Hungary would "have to sit with the Russian president," given Hungary's geography and energy dependence, and omitting his full context. This manipulation follows a well-documented operational pattern now formally attributed to at least two Russian influence networks active in Hungary. Srpski glasnik also amplified Elon Musk's post, declaring that "Soros's organization has taken over Hungary." This fits a longer pattern: the Soros narrative was the central villain of Fidesz's propaganda architecture since the 2015–2016 migration crisis, when the Hungarian government ran a state-funded national campaign around the fabricated "Soros Plan."
