The waters between them belong, under any honest reading of international law, within Greek sovereignty. These islands are entitled to maritime rights and zones just like mainland territory. That is not a Greek position. Greece should be no exception simply because Turkey is its neighbour. What Turkey calls “maximalism” is, in reality, Greece refusing to surrender sovereign rights guaranteed under international law. This is not about “Greek occupation troops”.
Most of the island defence structure is local defensive forces and National Guard units, reinforced after Turkey’s 1974 invasion of Cyprus.
Turkey cannot invoke demilitarisation while maintaining an Aegean amphibious army, issuing casus belli, conducting overflights, and threatening force.
Self-defence is not a treaty violation.

Turkiye Uluslarasi Deniz hukuku soylezmesine taraf degil. Ama Akdeniz ve Karadenizde karasularini 12 mil ilan etmek istiyor. !!! Yunanistan da "bunu yaparsan o zaman ben de Ege'de hakkimi kullanip 12 mil yaparim" diyor. Turkiye de "yapamazsin cunku biz o sözleşmeye taraf degiliz" diyor.
Sonuç olarak Turkiye taraf olMadigi bir sozlemenin kendisine verm3digi bir hak ile karadeniz ve Akdenizde 12 mil yetki isterken Yunanistana tarafi oldugu bir sozleme olmasina ragmen 12 mil yapmazsiniz diyor. Neresinden tutarsaniz Turkiye saldirgan ve acgozlu tarafta. Ustelik ikiyuzlu de...

▪ The debate is often presented misleadingly, as if 12 NM would suddenly introduce Greek control into a previously “open” sea.
▪ In reality, the Aegean already operates for decades with extensive Greek territorial waters at 6 NM surrounding thousands of islands and islets.
▪ Commercial shipping, military navigation and international transit continue without systemic obstruction.
▪ International law already guarantees navigational freedoms through:
– innocent passage,
– transit passage regimes.
▪ The core dispute is therefore geopolitical and jurisdictional, not navigational.
