Yesterday, I visited a shelter for underage survivors of sexual abuse. Some are only 13, 14, and 15 years old, and the oldest is just 17. Some were abused by their own fathers, while others were abused by men in their villages. Many are now pregnant, and some are already raising babies while they are still children themselves. My heart broke as I listened to their stories. This is why Beauty Beyond the Scars is more than an event. It is a movement to restore hope, healing, dignity, and opportunity for women and girls who have experienced trauma, abuse, and violence.
