BREAKING: RCMP have officially charged 18-year-old Jimmy Gassner of Lloydminster with second-degree murder in connection with the March 14 shooting on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway.
Gassner was arrested on Saturday in Canoe Lake, Saskatchewan, and is being transported back to Alberta to face court proceedings. The charge follows the death of 22-year-old Birinder Singh, who was killed while driving near Leduc.
Investigators confirmed today that while a suspect is in custody, they are still working to determine a motive for the incident.

Premier Danielle Smith says Alberta needs its own immigration system with a “sustainable” intake. She stated federal policies have allowed too many newcomers too quickly, straining health care, schools, housing, and jobs.
Smith wants a system like Quebec’s, selecting immigrants based on language, culture, and employability. She emphasises that newcomers should contribute as taxpayers before accessing social programs, including health care, education, and child care.
Permanent residents would only receive full benefits after meeting these requirements, and newcomers lacking basic English would face limitations until they integrate.

Edmonton police have begun testing facial recognition on body-worn cameras, loading roughly 7,000 images into a database to evaluate the technology in real-world conditions.
Through December, the system will scan faces within four metres of an officer’s activated body camera. Footage is sent to a Canadian cloud server, where an AI model checks for matches. Unmatched faces are deleted, while possible matches are forwarded for human review within about a day. Officers will not be alerted during the trial.
The project is the first field test of this software for both Edmonton Police Service and Axon, the body-camera manufacturer.
