I must congratulate my @Harvard colleague @GrahamTAllison on this day. The fact that his scholarship forms a viable construct to prevent U.S.-China military conflict in our time, as illustrated by President Xi's statement today, is nothing less than a remarkable feat. I can think of no higher achievement for a social scientist than this. For those trying to interpret this mention of the Thucydides Trap as some kind of insult to America, they are simply ignorant of the argument and the related history. To the contrary, American leaders and scholars alike should re-engage with this pathbreaking scholarship and realize that its true goal is preventing a new, catastrophic superpower war. I'm very proud to say that I was present @Kennedy_School when Prof. Allison rolled out this work about a decade ago and I have been teaching it regularly to my students @Watson_School. CONGRATULATIONS Graham and keep up your stellar work for peace and security.

Will the world wake up to global warming as people feel its effects? We argue that the answer depends on individual self-interest. We find that political responses to climate change are polarizing along lines of who is most vulnerable.

About Iran being America's Suez moment, some caution is warranted. In 1956 the British empire (and the French too) was already in terminal decline, and the Suez operation proved to be the last stand of a falling hegemony. America itself is not a declining military power today, despite depleting weapon stocks, but real threat to America is the loss of trust by its allies, affecting its military access & power projection capability. Israel was far less militarily powerful then. Nasser, who made a star appearance at the 1954 Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung, enjoyed much support in the emerging postcolonial world. This is not the case with Iran's Islamic government, despite the international sympathy it might gain from being attacked first and standing up to the US. Both the US and Iran are losers if the war continues, and both have good reasons for a deal, if Israel does not stifle US interest in a deal and continue killing potential dealmakers in Iran.

As great powers abandon rules and values for their own interests, middle powers like Canada have a choice: compete with each other for favour or act together with impact.

Canadian PM Mark Carney's widely acclaimed speech in Davos reads: "American hegemony in particular helped provide public goods, open sea lanes, a stable financial system, collective security ... we largely avoided calling out the gaps between rhetoric and reality." Who is we? Some of us did call: "Despite the exalted claims about its power, legitimacy, and public goods functions, that order was little more than the US-UK-West Europe-Australasian configuration...it should be seen as a limited international order, rather than an inclusive global order.” Its effects were not always benign on the Global South. cambridge.org/core/journals/… I also wrote in 2014 that the order was ending. "Whether or not America itself is declining, the post-war liberal international order underpinned by US military, economic and ideological primacy and supported by global institutions serving its power and purpose, is coming to an end." But the "The Davos Man" was sleeping. Mainstream magazines refused to publish essays critical of that order: one wrote to me in 2017 that Trump's (Trump 1) foreign policy won't last.
