When my grandmother was 99 she had a pacemaker fitted. They flew her to Wellington for the operation. Before they went the guy asked her if she wanted to be resuscitated. She said yes. The guy then asked her again, explaining that it can cause quite painful injuries. She was a completely capable woman of full mental capacity and said yes she understood and please resuscitate her if she needed it. He then asked her a third time, telling her that her quality of life might be different. At that point, my grandmother turned to my father and asked “What does he want me to say?” and Dad then intervened telling the now very defensive guy to knock it off. That kind of low level pressure happens in the health system every day.

@StDog8 @Edwenden @oshus1 @PronouncedHare That's... definitely not how it ever goes at my hospital. I guess there are some pretty bad hospitals out there so I'm not doubting your pastor that it happens in your area, but I've never heard of that here.

He says when staff see there is one, they assume it means DNR, and do not even read the dense legal doc. He said instead to do the Medical Power of Attorney and prep your rep with your wishes.

@RandomNumber758 @Edwenden @PronouncedHare You actually often can't. Cardiac arrest patients almost always have significant brain damage and loss of motor control. You might come back unable to speak, walk, and/or move your arms. Memory and personality are also known to be affected.

My Catholic Church's moral end-of-life guidelines gives me the right to refuse treatments or on the other hand accept the suffering treatment might bring. My decision, not a doctor's or some onlooker.

@Edwenden @PronouncedHare And brain damage in almost every case. I've told my wife that it's ok to resuscitate once but don't let them run a code on me twice in one day. If it's a one-off Damar Hamlin kind of thing, do what you gotta do. But we have 80yo heart failure patients code three times in a day

@PronouncedHare Brother, having given CPR to multiple old people trust me you don't want it past the age of about 80. Even on the slim chance they live you will have multiple burn injuries and half your ribs broken on top of whatever caused the arrest.

@PolitiBunny She's lying. These people believe it's ok to make up a story as long as it "represents" reality as they see it. The story itself doesn't need to be true so long as the larger moral narrative is, so she doesn't feel like she's lying.

@nothing6777876 @idreesali114 Im really worried about this idea that we might occupy the island. We can take it easily enough, but thousands of soldiers hanging out in an oil facility while taking constant drone hits seems... bad. I would just send a UUV to cut the pipelines to the island.
