@tim_cook The really sad part about Apple’s payments strategy is that it’s so simply and obviously short-sighted. By the end of this process every economically significant judiciary will hold Apple can’t be trusted to cultivate its own platforms - that it does so with abundantly clear contempt for both the rule of law and the developers who provide the most economic value to others. This is not some heroic effort to protect the interests of your investors. As with all misaligned power structures, there is no winner here. Everyone loses…perhaps Apple most of all. In the wake of these decisions and whatever criminal prosecution or regulatory force proves necessary to strong-arm Apple into compliance, these ecosystems will flourish in ways that you seemingly can’t imagine. Within a matter of years developers and consumers will reap harvests that they can’t fathom today. The gains will compound such that the lost economic potential becomes so apparent that it becomes a cautionary tale for future generations. Apple is increasingly cast - by courts as well as those developers its organization professes to serve - as greedy, envious, trite, and small. A steward of technology lost in its own narrow and calcified attitudes. The world is changing, Mr. Cook. And it’s happening in a categorical rejection of the stories and incentives that you have cultivated on this matter. Development, competition, and innovation simply can’t thrive when unyielding institutions skim so much off the top. Apple has done a lot of good, especially in hardware innovation - and I suspect that, with the introduction of Secure Enclave to the cloud, it will do a lot more. But this will fracture the legacy of your stewardship. I sure as hell wouldn’t want to hang my hat on that capstone. And I wish the same clarity for you.
