Karen Bass is a good example of how we have replaced competent "public service" w/a model of just rewarding your friends. In a functioning polity, allowing LA to burn down would have ended her career. But if all she really does is funnel $$ to friendly NGOs, that's different.
Spencer Pratt@spencerpratt

Karen Bass is the worst leader I’ve ever seen. Nobody knew she was out of the country during the Palisades Fire. Nobody could order air tankers because her deputy mayor was under house arrest. Her LADWP chief didn’t know our reservoir was empty. Karen Bass is running an absolute CLOWN SHOW. Vote like your life depends on it! Cuz it does!

WOW 🚨 It turns out the PR firm that Karen Bass and Democrats hired after the Pacific Palisades to change the narrative about the fire WAS PAID FOR FROM THE LAFD FOUNDATION “They used charity money to hire a crisis team to alter the after-action report” This is a new low The LAFD Foundation, which is the department’s official nonprofit charity arm that raises donations for equipment, training, and firefighter support paid to hire The Lede Company. They are a high-profile Beverly Hills PR/crisis communications firm - The LAFD released an After-Action Review Report in October 2025. - Multiple reports show the report was edited and revised to tone down criticism of the department and city leadership’s failures - The PR firm was involved in shaping messaging, reviewing media strategy, and reportedly suggesting edits around the report’s release Internal memos referenced protecting the department’s and Mayor Karen Bass’s reputation from “reputational harm.” Insane

Gavin Newsom conveniently announces $20 MILLION in taxpayer dollars will flow to an organization connected to his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom "Free diapers" will be handed out to newborns through the group Baby2Baby — a co-CEO of which is Norah Weinstein, who sits on Siebel Newsom's Board at her group "California Partners Project," per @TheKevinDalton IMAGINE THAT! This is NOT the first time Gavin's wife is connected to massive taxpayer projects.

Why do so many people who are rooting for Spencer Pratt still predict he won’t win? Is Karen Bass really that baked in?

Mayor Karen Bass appointed Gabrielle Amster as the new General Manager of Los Angeles Animal Services, she has no experience running a shelter at this level Here’s where the corruption comes in “All the salaries are like a million dollars plus, when it needs to be going for the dogs and keeping these dogs alive” Here’s something else crazy. The city is against Spay and Neuter The stated reason is it’s “culturally insensitive” LA County Animal Care and Control officials has cited cultural sensitivity as a reason for lax enforcement of breeding and /spay-neuter ordinances This is insane

@thestustustudio I recall reading that the owner of the club where George Floyd worked may have a familial connection to The Weather Underground possibly through her mother? I can’t recall well enough.

It’s also worth noting that the Venceremos Brigade’s vetting process was explicitly political. Potential brigadistas were selected based on their attitudes toward “the revolutionary movement” and the kind of society they wanted in the U.S. and Cuba, meaning the program was not a neutral travel exchange but a pipeline for people already aligned with radical, anti-imperialist politics. This comes from a sympathetic far-left academic who wrote an intersectional feminist history of the Venceremos Brigade.

By the time Karen Bass traveled to Cuba, the Weather Underground was already on the run over its bombing campaign. Bass was drawn into Cuba advocacy by a Venceremos Brigade member from her high school, someone who had joined the first Brigade alongside multiple Weather Underground figures. The Venceremos Brigade was never some harmless cultural exchange with Cuba. It was a radical political project from the beginning, born out of open sympathy for Castro’s revolution and surrounded from the start by some of the most militant elements of the American left. Today, the Brigade is sponsored by The People’s Forum, an organization the State Department has identified as part of a CCP-linked influence network. The idea that any brigadista could later become an elected official in American politics is mind-boggling.

When I was 20, I was on a TV show. When Karen Basura was 20, she was volunteering with a communist terrorist group in Cuba that bombed the US Capitol. Who is a better fit for LA?

@anishmoonka Wonder if knitting is similar although obviously not as physically exhausting. I read that dancing outperforms SSRIs. Not sure if it was considered a separate category from exercising.

Winston Churchill fought his depression with bricks. He'd lay them for hours at his country home in Kent. He joined the bricklayers' union. And in 1921 he wrote about why it worked. It took psychology another 75 years to catch up. He called his depression the "Black Dog." It followed him for decades. His method for fighting it back was as basic as it sounds: laying brick after brick, hour after hour. Churchill spelled out his theory in a long essay for The Strand Magazine. People who think for a living, he wrote, can't fix a tired brain just by resting it. They have to use a different part of themselves. The part that moves the eyes and the hands. Woodworking, chemistry, bookbinding, bricklaying, painting. Anything that drags the body into a problem the mind can't solve by itself. Modern psychology now calls this behavioral activation. It's one of the most-studied depression treatments out there. Depression sets a behavior trap. You feel bad, so you stop doing things, and doing less means less to feel good about. Feeling worse makes you do even less. The loop tightens until you can't breathe inside it. Behavioral activation breaks the loop from the action side. You schedule the activity first, even when every part of you doesn't want to. Doing it produces small rewards: a wall gets straighter, a painting fills in, a messy room gets clean. Those small rewards slowly rewire the brain. Action comes first, and the feeling follows. Researchers at the University of Washington put this to the test in 2006. They studied 241 adults with major depression and compared three treatments: behavioral activation, regular talk therapy, and antidepressants. For the people who were most severely depressed, behavioral activation matched the drugs. It beat the talk therapy. A 2014 review of more than 1,500 patients across 26 trials backed up the result. Physical work like bricklaying does something extra on top of this. It crowds out rumination, the looping bad thoughts that grind people down during the worst stretches of depression. Bricklaying needs both hands and gives feedback brick by brick: each one is straight or crooked. After an hour you can see exactly how much wall you built. No room left for the mental chewing. The line George Mack used in his post, "depression hates a moving target," is good poetry. The science behind it is sharper. Depression hates a brain that has somewhere else to be.
George Mack@george__mack

Winston Churchill used to lay 200 bricks per day to keep his mind busy when feeling down. Depression hates a moving target.

This is why so many people are moving to Red States!! After escaping the toxic “blue state” bubble of Washington for Wyoming, this American family discovered a healthier, soul-giving way of life centered on hard work, family, church, and neighborly values that feel like the way things are supposed to be. “…moving out of a blue state into a red state is now becoming like my personality, because it’s soul giving. It’s soul giving.”
