@DRMacIver Braess's paradox: adding capacity to a road network can make everybody's travel time slower (and removing capacity can make everybody's travel faster). I like that it doesn't rely on some crazy network pathology. It shows up all the time in real cities. blogs.cornell.edu/info2040/2022/…

@krismicinski @satnam6502 Ah, so you and your girlfriend were the ones who finally exhausted upstate NY’s citrus resources? For shame.

After exhausting all the other options I find myself back at the no citrus bar, Watershed. This time I ordered a Negroni for an easy life.

I'm visiting Ithaca (Cornell University) for a few days and I need a recommendation for a suitable cocktail bar where I can get a decent margarita but also not feel totally out of place in some uber-hipster-den. Which bar is the closest to a stylish New York style speakeasy?

@pwr2dppl The dot product of v with a unit vector u is the length of the projection of v onto the line through u. So if you visualize v + w as tip-to-tail addition, the length of its shadow on the line through u is the length of v's shadow, plus the length of w's shadow.

@kerckhove_ts I’m disappointed at the lack of `deriving Ord` here, for maximum cursedness

@yburyug @kerckhove_ts No, it's the people who know a tiny amount signaling to beginners they aren't smart enough. The rest of us are happily writing programs and getting on with life. Unfortunately a beginner can't easily tell when some dipshit wannabe category theorist is just talking out their ass.

@kerckhove_ts Isn't Haskell's whole deal the people who know it telling the people who don't they aren't smart enough or are wrong tho? Lol, or atleast that was my experience

When Haskell-learners ask "How do I get the String out of the IO String?" they don't know that they don't want the real answer to the question. They want to know that they need to use "<-".

One group of exploited workers is going to unionize? I suspect this will tip the balance so that faculty prefer, at the margin, to hire a different group of exploited workers. I am very smart.
Nicholas A. Christakis@NAChristakis

Graduate students are primarily students and trainees, not ordinary workers. Academia is a calling. I suspect unionization will tip the balance so faculty prefer, at the margin, to hire post-docs to do research in their labs rather than students. yaledailynews.com/blog/2022/10/2…

@johnregehr @AndrewCMyers @mboehme_ To clarify, "overestimates the powers of types systems" should really be "overestimates how easy it will be to create a type system that's powerful but also usable by programmers who aren't type theorists and/or math geniuses".

@satnam6502 Isn't throwing *yourself* under the bus part and parcel of being a senior engineer?

Senior engineers, don't throw your co-workers under the bus. It's never a good look. Sure, people make mistakes, but almost always mistakes are not due to the sole actions of a single person, but instead the combination of individual actions and decisions and actions of others.
