Yorkshire Dales grouse moor owner appointed to 'key role' at DEFRA. @DefraGovUK forgot to mention the grouse moor ownership, or that it's been under 2 x police investigations into alleged killing of hen harriers (nothing ever proven, obvs). Details ⬇️ raptorpersecutionuk.org/2023/07/27/yor…

Explains a fair bit of British political history that Labour can turn the day after one of their biggest ever victories to a period of nervy self-incrimination and the Conservatives can quietly move on from two of their worst ever defeats, and convince everyone it wasn’t too bad.

How would you feel if the government were to hand over £200 million+ of taxpayers’ money to a bunch of people for restoring a hospital, but at the end, the hospital the was in *even worse* shape than at the start? You’d be appalled, right? The story might even make the front cover of @PrivateEyeNews? Well, this is exactly the situation in Dartmoor national park. Just replace ‘people’ with ‘farmers’ and ‘hospital’ with ‘nature’. Dartmoor is one of the most ecologically degraded landscapes in all of Europe on account of chronic overgrazing by sheep. £200 million has been handed by the government to Dartmoor farmers over ten years under a ‘higher level stewardship’ scheme, during which time nature has continued comprehensively to be trashed. This has been as outrageous a misuse of public money as you’ll find anywhere. Quite rightly, Natural England is now proposing a new deal, under which farmers will need to reduce overgrazing in the national park by sheep, but can increase significantly the number of native cattle they graze on Dartmoor. (While sheep are highly destructive to nature, native cattle can play an important role in restoration.) Cue *outrage* on the part of Dartmoor farmers, MPs and the media. Some fraudulently make the point that the proposed changes will have a negative impact on our food security, a suggestion too imbecilic even to bother answering. This Dartmoor row is totemic. If Natural England is strong-armed into continuing to pour taxpayers’ money into the ongoing ruination of one of our most precious and cherished landscapes, then we can kiss goodbye to any hopes and dreams we might have of restoring nature more widely across Britain.

I really would like to know more about Nigel Farage's difficulties with Coutts. But the story keeps getting drowned out by incessant coverage of the eleven million people who can't get an NHS dental appointment right now.

When your home burns, floods, or is destroyed in an extreme climate weather event, when someone in your family dies from heat waves, or when crops fail and people starve—come for these three people: Wael Sawan (Shell CEO), Darren Woods (Exxon CEO), and Patrick Pouyanne (TotalEnergies CEO). They knew what was coming and did it to you anyway. Sue them, shame them, heckle them, despise them. These are choices. They are to blame, not society. “Corporations are people, my friend.” -Mitt Romney theguardian.com/us-news/2023/j…

The judge will be deciding whether camping is “outdoor recreation” or whether it simply facilitates outdoor recreation so isn’t included in the definition. What do you think? Is wild camping outdoor recreation?
