32 years ago today, something was taken from within us that cannot be described anatomically. I do not know a language that can fully capture that fear, pain, loss, and horror. By July 1994, Rwanda was shattered in spirit, and in the most practical sense. So when people tell us what we should tolerate, or ignore, I want them to understand that baseline, and what starting from scratch truly took. I also want them to consider what it says about this country and its people, that we are here today, with what we have built together. Our rebuilding is, at its heart, an act of remembrance. It is about being alive again and so present, so capable, so impossible to ignore that denial itself becomes the small thing. To those who survived: You’re here, what a gift. You were Rwanda when Rwanda almost wasn’t. Thank you for holding on, and for telling us what you could find the words for. To those who were taken from us so brutally: you are not lost to us. You are in everything that is beautiful. You are in the children. You are in the soft evening breeze, and the first light of dawn. You are in the hills, where your laughter was last heard. And we remember you. Always. #Kwibuka32

As international visitors enjoy @CityofKigali during the @UCI_cycling World Cycling Championships, locals face significant challenges. Road closures have forced residents to walk for hours, as many routes are reserved exclusively for cyclists. For example, if you live in Kimironko and need to travel to Remera, @Rwandapolice block road crossings, requiring you to take lengthy detours. This can mean walking over an hour just to reach an authorized crossing point. Additionally, many Kigali suburbs have been without water for over a month, with authorities - @wasac_rwanda redirecting water resources to hotels to accommodate the #UCI event, leaving residential areas underserved. In Kagame’s Rwanda, locals are aware of these issues but remain silent, fearing serious consequences for themselves and their families if they speak out.

Just 7 months ago, M23 fighters alongside Rwanda’s Defence Forces advanced on Goma, killing at least 17 peacekeepers from the Southern African regional force and the @UN mission in #DRCongo. Today, Rwanda is lobbying to host a long-term UN campus. If approved, this would signal international complicity in legitimizing and protecting Kagame’s regime. He has positioned himself so the international community and Western powers, driven by their interests in the region he controls, avoid holding him accountable. Through Rwanda’s status as the 4th largest troop contributor to UN peacekeeping, Kagame uses his leverage: the UN fears that challenging him could trigger a withdrawal of troops, allowing him to act with impunity.

Africa expert for @vrtnws Stijn Vercruysse @vercrus is not allowed to travel to Rwanda to report on the #UCIWorldChampionship2025. Vercruysse was stopped at the check-in desk. He received accreditation from @Rwanda_Sports through @UCI_cycling, authorizing him to travel to Rwanda. "As a journalist, I'm not allowed to leave," Vercruysse said at the check-in counter. "The Rwandan government has forbidden the airline from letting me on the plane." An official reason is still unknown, but "it might be about my past critical reporting on Rwanda." Footage from Équateur, DRC where communities report the arrival of large numbers of Mbororo pastoralists from Central Africa, moving in with their cattle without restriction. Some local observers link them to M23 networks and Kagame’s broader strategy in the region. What is clear is that the balkanization of the DRC is no longer theoretical. It is unfolding in North and South Kivu under M23 control. The Mbororo, traditionally pastoralists following seasonal routes, are not new to the region. But their presence on this scale raises the risk of violent clashes with farming communities already under pressure. The pattern is consistent, populations are displaced, territories destabilized, and parallel power structures created - all serving Kagame’s project of control beyond Rwanda’s borders.

I recently spoke with @destandaard about the troubling intersection of sport and politics, particularly in the context of the upcoming @UCI_cycling World Championships in Rwanda. As I shared in the interview: “What’s happening with the World Championships in #Rwanda is just a brazen interference of Kagame’s politics in a sporting event. The World Championships are primarily intended to put the Kagame brand in the spotlight. The principle that politics shouldn’t interfere with sport is a convenient fiction that obscures the fact that the organizers are indeed serving a dictator and subordinating all moral rules to the pursuit of profit.” Cycling, and sport more broadly, deserve better than complicity in repression. It’s time to choose the right side of history. Read full article here: archive.is/jSoq7

Who covered the costs of your travel and accommodation? Did you personally pay for them, which would suggest a strong personal interest in attending Kwita Izina? Or were your expenses covered by Kagame’s regime, using taxpayer money, in return for helping it polish its international image - despite it’s record of repression, war crimes, crimes against humanity and crime of aggression in eastern DRC?
