@WasteDive Or in other words . . . even for those companies who have said this is a priority, 98%+ of their packaging is designed to be used once then enter the waste stream.

Most impactful (depressing?) number I found in @WasteDive's look at 2021: less than 2% of reusable packaging in the portfolios of the companies who signed the 2025 new plastics global commitment.

What's in a name? A lot! This new survey by @YaleClimateComm finds that people associate "natural gas" with "clean" and "methane gas" (which is primarily what natural gas is made of) with "pollution" -- which is what it is. Carbon pollution. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

@rudeboy_dwight @Super_Cruiser_X @CharlieJGardner no problem re: the name. To clarify, all the processes that ended up w/plastic in the ocean DO contribute to climate change. It's the visible end result of extracting, refining, transporting, and using fossil fuels.

When did the climate crisis grow to subsume all environmental issues? I regularly see e.g. plastic pollution and biodiversity loss framed as climate change issues, do journalists just not understand or is climate the new shorthand for 'environment'

@rudeboy_dwight @Super_Cruiser_X @CharlieJGardner That's not my name 🤷‍♀️ of course there is nuance. Maybe it's not right to say A = B = C but it's also not right to say that plastic pollution is a completely separate issue from climate change.

@ClimateAdam Yes!! This is why we can & should frame climate action as what we gain, not what we will lose. Abundance over scarcity!

@Super_Cruiser_X @CharlieJGardner But they are inextricably connected. Our system of overproduction + resource extraction causes #1 and #2. These problems complex, but acting like they are all separate bubbles that aren't interacting with each other, caused by, and part of the same system is false.

@CharlieJGardner This is correct. The ecological crisis overlaps with but is not synonymous with the climate crisis. Most people don't know, for example, that the #1 cause of extinction is habitat loss, not CC, even though #2 is CC. Few non-science educated understand the complexities.

@CharlieJGardner These issues are interconnected. As a waste researcher who deals with plastic pollution, I'm frustrated when people DON'T correctly frame that as a climate change issue. Plastic waste is the end result of a long supply chain of waste, CO2/CH4 emissions, habitat destruction, etc.
