Urge @CAgovernor @GavinNewsom to lead to prevent traffic violence, as he rightly is for gun violence - both leading, preventable causes of death, esp kids. Pls ask Newsom to sign this commonsense vehicle safety bill (no matter where you live, pls sign): walksf.org/our-work/campa…

.@GavinNewsom and his political allies are RIGHTLY calling for gun control today We hope he will not turn around in the next few weeks and veto SB961, which is Speed Control (Intelligent Speed Assistance) Better policy can stop the needless bloodshed from guns and cars as well

New study finds that autonomous vehicles could massively increase car trips, a terrible outcome for cities and the environment: "Regardless of [whether autonomous vehicles are shared or owned], the likelihood of making additional trips increases." scholar.google.com/scholar_url?ur…

We've coated the U.S. with heat-absorbing asphalt roads and filled them with cars. We need to act now to implement high-speed rail network that forms the backbone for a new, electric transportation system. usa.streetsblog.org/2024/08/05/opi…

The US culture of parents driving their children-or not-changed completely over one generation. I saved up babysitting money to buy a Fuji 12-speee in jr high and that was my transport. My parents never drove me to school (not once) or any afterschool activity.

We need to design our bike infrastructure for all ages & abilities, including & especially young teenagers who deserve the freedom of mobility… ideally without needing to rely on parents to drive them everywhere.  🚲❤️

I wrote this six years ago. "We designed our cities for driving, and people are dying." Still relevant in Toronto, and most Canadian cities. Not so in London. Not so in Paris. These cities have undergone a transformative change. They have grabbed the bull by the horns and prioritized people and mobility over cars. When will we do the same? theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

@DrTaraGoddard I hear you. 14 years ago I took on watching my baby nephew 1x a week. The fast cut through traffic on his street made getting out of the driveway terrifying. It cemented my interest in active, safe transportation.

This kind of small-scale retail, cafe/restaurant or service should be legal on every corner in cities/suburbs. A basic part of walkable communities. They aren’t easy financially, but at least they should be legal. In plans I’m working on, I’m calling them “corner convenience.”

Bike lanes - good. Bike parking - good. Metro access - good. Big public green square - good. Density - good. Mixed use - good. Tired of North America acting like we are reinventing the wheel with 100 consultations per project when Europe has just been doing it.

Too many pedestrians and cyclists are killed by cars. I appreciate this article, particularly this line: “We call crashes “accidents,” even when the causes, from driver speed to road design, are deliberate choices.” But it misses or understates so many critical things: 1. Municipal councils across the country have been confused about Vision Zero, weakly implementing bastardized versions of it and then wondering why they see no change in pedestrian and cycling deaths. A failure of attention, understanding and leadership. 2. Cyclings are now getting killed where we have bike lanes as happened last week to a 24 year old woman in Toronto - dangerously pushed out of a bike lane into on coming traffic by a dumpster dropped in the bike lane hours earlier. The dumpster was illegally placed in one of the busiest bike lanes in the city. A failure of police enforcement. 3. We value the lives of drivers more than the lives of pedestrians and cyclists. We treat cyclists like unwanted, illegitimate road users, instead of the urban hero’s that they are - making our city more liveable by choosing sustainable transportation. Drivers just don’t seem to care about these lives. A failure of our culture and compassion. Please retweet. People are dying - and these are deliberate choices. We must fix this. theglobeandmail.com/opinion/editor…

I think all that Flavor Flav has done during the Olympics is quite beautiful. Spreading good will and signal-boosting sports and athletes who really deserve it. Deepening existing ties between sports and culture. Would love to see more cultural figures get involved in that way.

This chart should embarrass city leaders. It's absurd to charge 5-10x more for a bikeshare trip than a transit ride. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
