This is so brutal. Even after the layoffs, top decile tech compensation is probably higher than median doctor compensation for several specialities. I think a lot of potential doctors became staff engineers last decade

The problem is that high earning careers tend to be short lived careers, and people who lose their jobs due to layoffs as high earners tend struggle to find same salary level work ageism is wildly common!
if you have a high earning career broadly you should be saving a lot

The FIRE (financial independence retire early) movement has done an immense amount of harm to society This is coming from someone who used to be a believer in FIRE, but I have realized just how much of a fallacy it is, as I have grown older Taking a bunch of high potential income earners and convincing them that their life goal should be to pursue a net worth that allows them to check out of society is immensely damaging to the social fabric Many of these people sit on the upper echelon of office jobs, have built great businesses, or are at the top of their field in their career field They should be inspired to continue doing what they are best at, and ultimately, mentor and give back to the next generation who want to pursue those same goals Instead, many of these FIRE folks become wandering retirees with a meaningless life who are trying to grasp on to money as their north star It is a false sense of security and accomplishment. Becoming wealthy should never be a goal in the first place. It should have always been to pursue something that adds meaning to your own life and to society It is a completely fallacy to believe that retiring will be your source of happiness. More often than not, it has the complete opposite effect

@BarneyFlames @adityajakki The tunnel through the wildlife sanctuary is dumb and will cost way more than an elevated alignment there. Above ground would only take a tiny % of the land in the sanctuary, while saving a lot of money and helping it be built more quickly (So more environmental benefits from it)

A short 🧵 on India's electronic goods imports and what has been driving the large spike for the past few months. In terms of absolute value for FY 2025-26, electronics components, telecom instruments and computer hardware were the largest contributors. Thankfully, we don't import a lot of consumer electronics anymore.

India's trade deficit widened by 11 Bn $ in June. This was driven by a large spike in crude/petroleum and electronics imports (fertilizer import value up by 200% YoY!, but a smaller contributor overall). Petroleum and electronic imports alone account for 63% of the increase. Electronics and engineering exports going strong at ~20% YoY growth. But, we are nowhere close to being a net exporter of electronics. Electronic goods imports are ~3x of exports.
