feel like the most obvious explanation of the East Asian vs South Asian college admission discrepancy that seems to be ignored is that maybe all the tiger mom violin lessons, fencing, NGOs and other extracurriculars actually work and South Asians just test-prep-maxx.

i gave GPT-5.4 the easy subset + the reference Brainfuck interpreter and asked it to write solutions, and it one-shotted 20/20

Both claims here are false ? The authors test in one shot as well in-context setting, where they provide the model with 3 sample programs along with the information.
Second even with the agentic harness the score is <15%

I never respected this guy but now I respect him even less. This is an absolutely braindead take when you look at the details. Not only is the task something almost no human programmers can do either (one-shotting programs in ridiculous languages like brainfuck) the models can solve it just fine when allowed to use their full capabilities in an agentic harness.

The famous SFFA case treated Indians and East Asians as a single group. This masked significant heterogeneity: It's way harder to get in if you're Indian! In Columbia's internal admissions database (h/t @cremieuxrecueil), East Asian applicants had a 41% lower odds of admission than equally qualified White applicants, whereas South Asian applicants had 63% lower odds.
