On this day in 1974, Reds manager Jim Iley agreed terms with Halifax Town for the transfer of central defender John Pickering. The number 5 shirt vacated by Eric Winstanley's departure in the summer of 1973 had been worn by no fewer than 6 players in the 73/74 season so Pickering was seen as Eric's replacement. The transfer was effective from 1 July. #BarnsleyFC #HalifaxTown #JohnPickering

On this day in 1977, a 'Grand Charity Football Match' was held on the Coop Sports Ground (Queens Ground) in which an All Star Celebrity Team played The Barnsley Chronicle. The All Star team was described as ‘direct from Las Vegas, Darkest Lundwood, South Shields and the Old No. 7! It included several Reds players including Barry Murphy, Jim Iley (Manager), Peter Springett, Mick Pickering, Brian Joicey, John Peachey and Phil Chambers. Idk what the result was. #BarnsleyFC #BarnsleyChronicle Photos courtesy of Barnsley Collector - Andy Horsfield

Five years ago today, Barnsley were 90 minutes from the Championship play-off final. I take a look back at that remarkable time under Valerien Ismael which, sadly, has been followed by half a decade of steady decline. barnsleychronicle.com/article/35617/…

Also on this day in 1991, Barnsley manager Mel Machin was reported to have turned down an approach for the vacant manager role at Stoke City. Machin and Harry Redknapp (who'd also ruled himself out) were said to be Stoke's main targets. #BarnsleyFC #MelMachin #StokeCity

Also on this day in 1998, 'papers linked Reds boss Danny Wilson with the Sheffield Wednesday managers job available as Wednesday hadn't renewed Ron Atkinson's contract. We know how that ended... 🥹 #BarnsleyFC #DannyWilson

Remembering Eric Winstanley, five years on from his passing ❤️ Captain, goalscorer, and promotion-winner as both a player and coach - and a member of the Oakwell Hall of Fame. Once a Red, always a Red.

@bostonwayne His goals per game record seems good at all the clubs he played at too Wayne: Clyde 20 in 28; Partick Thistle 5 in 7; Cork City 41 in 31! (obvs why Brough Fletcher signed him); Vale: 0 in 2; Crewe 13 in 15. Strange. I've been unable to find a cause of death.

@BarnsleyFCOTD I've had a look on ancestry and nothing much on there about him. His wife never remarried and died in 1995 but was cremated. His daughter died in 2012. I wonder why he only played 14 games with that scoring record. He didn't play many games for anyone really.

On this day in 1933, Reds' centre forward Peter Cunningham signed for Port Vale. Signed from Cork City by manager Brough Fletcher the previous July, he played 14 games and had an amazing scoring record, getting 17 goals including 5 in a 6-2 defeat of Darlington. After spells at Vale and Crewe Alexandra, he returned to his native Scotland at the end of the 1933/34 season and sadly passed away on 3 September 1934 aged just 28. #BarnsleyFC #PeterCunningham

In addition to the play-off V #Swansea 5 years ago, in a strange quirk, Swansea (Town rather than City at the time) were also the opposition, again at Oakwell, the only other time Barnsley have played a league game on this date. In 1947 after multiple games were postponed in Jan and Feb, the season wasn’t completed until June 7th and on this day the Reds beat Swansea 3-1 at Oakwell with goals from Walter Bennett, George Robledo and Gavin Smith. #BarnsleyFC

On this day in 1989, a Barclays Football League representative team played a team made of Skol Northern League players to mark the centenary of the Northern League. It was badged the ‘first meeting between the world’s two oldest leagues’ and was played at Croft Park, Blyth. The FL team was intentionally made up of players born in the north east including Bryan Robson, Paul Gascoigne, Chris Waddle and Barnsley’s David Currie. The Northern League side played in the red and white stripes and black shorts of South Bank, the only survivors from 1889 when the league started. The match ended 2-2, David Linighan and Marco Gabbiadini scorers for the FL. #BarnsleyFC #DavidCurrie #SkolNorthernLeague

Strange one this! On this day in 1975, the Hartlepool Mail reported that during the previous season Barnsley player John Manning was for a time being paid by both Barnsley AND Crewe Alexandra. He transferred to Crewe during November but surely the league wouldn't allow the connection to 2 clubs in the same league at the same time! Sadly, John passed away in 2021. #BarnsleyFC #CreweAlexandra #JohnManning
