20 REFERENCES!!!🤯🤯🤯 When @JMaraganore asked @BarryGreene to provide references before hiring him to lead oncology at Millennium back in 2000, Barry gave John 20 references and said, "These 12 are going to gush about me, these 3 will probably say good things, and these 5 are going to be pretty negative!!" As soon as I left the Sage offices I emailed John to do some fact-checking! John said, "I've never seen anything like it before, both the number and inclusion of people who he knew had a less favourable view! He provided a short paragraph for each person, their e-mail and phone number. I remember calling most, but not all the people." Barry told me, "At the time I had a five-year-old and a two-and-a-half-year-old. My wife wasn't so sure about moving here. So it was a huge move. I had to make sure I wouldn't get up here and in two months say, oh, my God, why did I do this? A lot of people leave a role or company where they don't know the people and after a couple of months they're like, I can't believe I did this! I didn't want that situation for myself. I wanted to know the people, and I wanted them to know what I was good at and what people might complain about me after I started. So when I interviewed at Millennium, I probably talked to 28 people in the course of coming up and down. And I remember sitting down with John and writing all the 28 people on a piece of paper and telling what I thought about each other. And my view was, if I can't come in here and be me, and get the right people together, it's not going to work out. And John and I agreed and aligned on just about everybody, and my observations were both good and less good." --- I've been writing a lot about executive breakups lately. Well, this is how you avoid them, and most importantly, how you end up working with someone for 20 years in the same company and develop life-saving medicines for patients together. Loving you, Angelos.
