It's Good Friday today, which is about the only day of the year (Easter Sunday is the other) when I feel almost actually religious. The thought of the betrayal in the garden and being dragged away and tortured by the soldiers, and Pilote's exasperation and dismissal, and the rabble turning out for the criminal instead of Jesus, and the lonely death. I'm listening to Bach's Matthew Passion just now. I know we won't go to church - I wish I could make myself - apparently the Anglican service today just sort of dies away in despair; like the first disciples the idea is the pointlessness of life without God I imagine. Whether we have the psychological need for forgiveness, redemption and renewal and thus invented the Easter story, or whether the story is true and that's why it rings such a loud bell in our consciousness (I should say "my" not "our" because it's a very, very strong need for me), I sort of think (after decades wrestling with the thought) it doesn't matter. Life is hard, we will die, and lose all that we love. But yet the sun still rises and yet there could still be hope for us all. Forgive the rambling.

Today the regime in Iran executed Amirhossein Hatami— he was just 18 years old. To every privileged Westerner chanting “hands off Iran” while waving the flag of his executioners: this is what you represent—dead Iranians.

This US-Israeli attack on peaceful civilian healthcare centres is doing the opposite of the declared original aim of this war: to enable the Iranians to rise up against the Revolutionary Guards. Instead it is rallying every patriotic Iranian to defend their homeland against Trump & Netanyahu’s murderous barbarism

American-Israeli attack on the Pasteur Institute in Tehran, a century-old health research center and a member of the international Pasteur network. Since 1920, this institute has been one of the pioneers and major hubs of vaccine production in the region.

Ben Jamal, head of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, and Chris Nineham of the Stop the War Coalition both now convicted criminals. Let us remember, however, that the conditions they breached were imposed to stop their antisemitic hate march from routing past a synagogue on a Saturday. Their sentence? Conditional discharge. An absolute joke. This government still does not take antisemitism seriously.

@Bartlebeans It’s come down to us from the Latin “litania”, and from the Ancient Greek λιτανεία - a form of prayer or entreaty. It has basically come to mean a series of prayers recited back and forth between a leader and the congregation

The Litany is appointed to be said on Fridays throughout the year. On Good Friday in particular the Litany offers us words with which to pray when we might feel we have none of our own. “By thine Agony and bloody Sweat; by thy Cross and Passion… Good Lord, deliver us”. Amen.

@newstart_2024 Rory is right. But that is how "disorder" evolves. We say "entropy" for that. We have to accept it and things keep moving. For me all modern developments look "fossils" of old "healthy" things.

Rory Sutherland made a quietly devastating observation about one of the biggest societal shifts of the last 50 years. He said the move to the double-income household started as an option but quickly became an obligation. The big winners? Governments (twice as many people to tax) and property owners (now two salaries were needed to buy a house). The big loser? The family itself, which lost roughly 35 hours of discretionary leisure time per week — with no real increase in living standards, because the extra money was largely soaked up by higher house prices and taxes. It’s a classic example of how something that begins as liberation can quietly turn into a new form of constraint. Longitudinal studies on happiness and time use (including data from the American Time Use Survey and OECD reports) show that the sharp rise in dual-earner households correlated with stagnant or declining leisure time for families, while subjective well-being metrics for parents have not risen in line with the additional income — supporting the idea that much of the gain was captured by housing costs and taxation rather than improved quality of life. It’s a reminder to look carefully at changes that society presents as inevitable progress. What do you think — has the double-income model delivered more freedom or more pressure for most families?
