@andreap_cordova haha nah i’m just lucky that publishers know that i’m very open to their riskiest titles
English

@BarryPierce You always have the best recommendations!!

look, I already have a low view of that place but this cannot actually be true. you’d literally not understand anything you’re reading.

Finding out people on booktok skip everything but dialogue makes reading 30+ books a year make a lot more sense.

If only all confessional poems were as funny as this one. Clive James takes the great Gore Vidal zinger to heart: ‘It is not enough to succeed. Others must fail.’

@Lucas_Church @norabird look, I'm a bookseller who deals with mostly commercial literary fiction. you clearly have a different view of the game at a university press. I imagine POD is more common in your part of the industry. I'm not dunking on it. POD just has a different reputation in my part.
English

@BarryPierce @norabird So you need a warehouse to feel it’s real? Like the book you buy/sell needs to have been sitting somewhere else beforehand? I’m sorry if that sounds snarky but that is the only difference in offset and POD. All books are computer files before they’re printed.
English

hate to be preachy and annoying but if you just enquire about books at an actual bookshop, we’re able to see if the book is genuinely available or if it’s only POD.

The greatest harbinger of end times is not plague or war, but the sudden enormous proliferation of Xerox-quality POD editions (unmarked! no warning!) from houses like Penguin.
English

@fake_estate_ yeah, the pics I keep seeing of their POD titles are very bleak. I've yet to come across POD quality that low over here. they really don't seem to give a fuck
English

@BarryPierce Not sure. I’ve been out of book selling for a few years now, but there has never been any transparency from them about which of their backlist is POD. Doubly frustrating, since the quality of their POD is beyond appalling.
English

@Lucas_Church @norabird it means...the only definition of the term that I know. POD books only exist when they're actually ordered, otherwise they're just, idk, PDFs on a computer somewhere? they live in the strange in-between of conceptually existing and physically existing
English

@fake_estate_ what's going on with PRH at your side of the pond
English

@BarryPierce Ex-bookseller, most publishers disclose this…but PRH do not.
English

@norabird haha I mean yes, but also no? it's a kind of liminal thing, isn't it
English

@BUSTYPHILLIPS jeez. that’s insane. but maybe then this is a US specific problem? in the UK, PRH distribute their own books. and the largest distributor, Gardners, does flag if a book is only POD. I have to admit I have not seen these POD Penguin Classics over here…
English

@BarryPierce it used to be that you’d only get this if a book was listed as POD on Ingram. That’s no longer the case - backlist coming direct from publishers will often have this. And one of Ingram’s main warehouses (Tennessee) doesn’t seem to carry books anymore, just files for POD.
