Happy Pride! 🌈 This Pride Month we wanted to shine a spotlight on the amazing work @ShareEastLondon is doing around inclusive research. At SHARE (Sexual Health and HIV All East Research), they are working alongside communities to tackle health inequalities affecting LGBTQIA+ people and other underserved groups across East London and beyond. With our support, their research is helping improve access to innovative HIV treatments, address cancer inequalities, support trans and gender-diverse communities, and ensure that people with lived experience help shape the future of healthcare. New research coming out of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine shows that one person each week is dying of TB, undiagnosed, in England. In East London, we have some of the highest rates of newly diagnosed cases of TB in Western Europe. That’s why we’ve committed to fund the Centre for TB – which will meet the rising need for improved healthcare and scientific research in this area. 4 in 10 UK GPs are already using AI scribes - despite concerns around safety and regulation... New research coming out of @QMUL and supported by Barts Charity and @CR_UK reveals that AI-powered note-taking tools are becoming a significant part of primary care, despite ongoing concerns around patient safety, regulation and medicolegal responsibility. The study found that, while GPs see clear benefits in reducing administrative burden and improving efficiency, many are concerned about how these technologies should be governed and safely integrated into healthcare. As AI adoption accelerates across the NHS, evidence like this is vital to ensuring digital innovation improves care without compromising trust or safety. Congratulations to our former Chair, Paul Rawlinson, who has received an MBE for Services to Health Sector Charities in the King's birthday honours list. Speaking about this amazing achievement, he said: “I am humbled to be recognised in the King’s birthday honours list. It was a privilege to spend 10 years working with the team at Barts Charity, the last five of these as Chair. The Charity exists to work with Barts Health NHS Trust and the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London, and support them in their efforts to improve health outcomes for people in East London. It was an honour to help, and incredibly rewarding to put all my years of experience to such a worthwhile challenge.” Our Chief Executive, Fiona Miller Smith, said: “It was an honour and a privilege to work with Paul while he was Chair of Barts Charity. He was totally committed to our mission and was determined that we did everything with a laser-focus on changing lives in East London and beyond. It is wonderful that his passion has been recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours.”

We're so pleased to hear that the digital vein-to-vein programme has been shortlisted for a @HSJ_awards this year! 🥳 Developed to transform blood transfusion safety across Barts Health NHS Trust, the programme has introduced barcode scanning and electronic bedside checks, making sure the right blood reaches the right patient, every time. This has delivered significant improvements in safety, efficiency and clinical workflow, with more than 95% of transfusions now delivered using the new digital system and repeat blood samples due to labelling errors reduced to just 0.5%. We're proud to see this innovative work recognised nationally, and we'll be cheering our colleagues on at the awards ceremony in September. #HSJPatientSafety

In East London, 111 people per 100,000 are living with multiple sclerosis (MS). It’s often diagnosed in your 30s or 40s - but symptoms can go on for years before that. There’s no cure yet, but the right treatment can help manage it. We went to cheer on @achealthyageing at @pintofscience last week. It felt very topical - given that the Pension Commission had released a report that day, showing there are 15 million Britons in the UK who're not saving enough to retire. The amazing staff at ACHA are dedicated to improving care and support for older people in North East London through research, education and training. We're proud to support them and look forward to seeing the impact they'll have on our East London community.
