@RalserLab I agree the PhD should be a joyful time. Mine certainly was. I believe PIs have the important duty to create an inspiring and safe environment for exploration. Demand of at least 4 papers - very common in Dutch academia - is not helpful and not a sign of quality of the PhD

I truly believe the PhD can and perhaps should be amongst the best time of your life. I though found postdoc and Junior PI time equally good, perhaps the latter was rven the most exciting period thus far, at least for me.

The fact that the public sphere has become so toxic that people no longer feel safe to seek or continue in public office undermines the very foundations of democracy. What a dismal observation. Where are we heading as a society?

@ItaiYanai Mmm, my primary reason is always curiosity, i.e. the urge for understanding the how (and why) of the phenomenon.

‘Mechanism’ is a loaded word in the life sciences, and sometimes we forget that the main reason we want to reveal the mechanism for a particular phenomenon is to become more confident that we really are observing it (and not just for the sake of knowing the mechanism).
