Over the past five years, JPMorgan has basically stayed bearish on Tesla the entire time, consistently calling it overvalued and issuing sell ratings with low price targets. The problem is, Tesla didn’t behave like a normal stock. It had huge swings, but overall it still moved higher, which means most of those calls didn’t play out in a way that would’ve helped an investor. If you look at it practically, their directional accuracy on Tesla is probably somewhere in the 20% to 30% range at best. They were occasionally right during pullbacks, but missed the bigger picture and the major runs. So while their reasoning around risk and valuation wasn’t crazy, it just didn’t translate into being right about what the stock actually did.
