Mis compañeros eran todos hijos de la élite, y yo, un americano de primera generación de padres inmigrantes de Michoacán recientemente amnistiados. El verdadero sueño americano.

Cotija has been under siege before. Perhaps the darkest episode in it's history is when bandit José Inés "El Indio" Chavez Garcia (middle) sacked and torched the town in 1918. The small defense force of the town was overwhelmed by "El Indio's" 2000 man army . His army was feared in all regions of Michoacán, Jalisco and Guanajuato, for its brutality, especially towards women and children. Between 1915 and 1918, Inés Chávez torched the towns of Apatzingán, Paracho, Cotija and Degollado. He became known as "the Attila of Michoacán, Jalisco and Guanajuato", and his army as "The Painted Leopards"

5 hour shoot out including drones. Marine helicopter with artillery. Smoke clouds in the air. Displacement of families in the ranchos. Roads in and out of the town blocked. This was Cotija, Michoacán yesterday.

@space_queen23 When I would tell people who I met in the city that I am Mexican they were always surprised because they associated Mexican with Poblanos. I always tell people Michoacános were in NY first.
