"Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II was known in Georgia and throughout the world for his diverse work. He produced 20 paintings and icons, including portraits of his parents and works titled 'Holy Trinity,' 'God with Us,' and 'Archangel Michael.' Most of these are kept in the Holy Trinity Cathedral and his residence. In 2007, an album of icons painted by the Patriarch was published in Tbilisi.  In addition to painting, the Patriarch was a sculptor and a composer. During meetings with pilgrims, he often presented them with icons of Our Lady, Saint Nino, and Saint George. He also gifted a hand-painted icon of the Holy Trinity to EU diplomats. In 2007, he famously presented opera singer Montserrat Caballé with a copy of Queen Tamar’s cross.  Politically, the Patriarch remained a central figure; President Salome Zurabishvili received his blessing for her inauguration, as did subsequent leaders. On March 17, 2026, President Mikhail Kavelashvili visited the Patriarch at the Caucasus Medical Center to receive a similar blessing. Among his most unique legacies is the 2021 icon 'Mother of Meekness' (or 'Mother of Humility'). This image, housed at his residence, is unique for its portrayal of Jesus Christ’s humble and gentle love for His Mother."
