@ggreenwald Yes, but Obama’s JCPOA was another noteworthy, even admirable, example of a U.S. President fighting the lobby on behalf of America’s best interests, and actually succeeding (until JCPOA was ripped up).

The last American President to meaningfully defy Israel was George H.W. Bush in 1991. His administration told Israel that American loan guarantees would be cut off if Israel kept harming US interests by expanding West Bank settlements.
The bipartisan Israel Lobby in Congress went apeshit, and Bill Clinton and the Dems then ran against Bush 41 in 1992 by accusing Bush of anti-Semitism for telling Israel no. Other than Obama's meek UN abstention on the way out, that was the last time a US President dared to assert American interests over Israel interests.
