@algekalipso After LSD, I experienced the whole self thing and it generally reduced my sense of distinct separations long after. It led me to believe that DID could be impacted by it. And also that maybe we are all on a spectrum where DID is one extreme.

There's a brief window of time after coming down from a strong 5-MeO-DMT experience where my subagents are _deeply_ unified. Almost as if I'm a fully coherent person! (not quite, but directionally so). It is in this state where, if I happen to look at someone move or have a conversation with them, I can _instantly_ spot all of the internal contradictions, inner tensions, and unresolved conflicts in their personality. This perception doesn't last very long, maybe 35 or 40 minutes. But I bet it's tapping into something very real! I'd love to do some research on this - perhaps the brief post-5-MeO-DMT state is a kind of subagentic Truesight! More research required :-)

Humans are like the cognitive offloading species. Society, teams, collaboration, they’re all forms of offloading that allow us to surpass our limitations immensely. Yet, they likely also encourage our devolution.

Naming their next model after Cthulhu makes it hard to take Anthropic seriously as the good guys. It's fun at any other software company, not one that actually is flirting with extinction.

“ A draft blog post that was available in an unsecured and publicly-searchable data store prior to Thursday evening said the new model is called “Claude Mythos” and that the company believes it poses unprecedented cybersecurity risks. “

Do you believe that temporal continuity is necessary for consciousness? I think temporal continuity is just a measure of duration of consciousness. If we answer yes, the implication is that maybe we exist simultaneously both in the present and the past or even the future.

@kepe__ It makes sense. I think the ADSR also only accounts for one relation that would lead people to have synesthetic interpretations. I think the letter shapes visually also do that. And probably any associations or similarities to other ideas.

The Kiki/Bouba synesthesia effect is due to the ADSR envelope that the sounds make when spoken.

@kepe__ Oh I misread. That’s hard. The letter i is thinner than o. It’s a pointed letter. So maybe that’s part of it. Also the pronunciation of O is utilizing the O shape of the mouth so maybe most things are pointier than O relatively 🤔

@arcticinstincts Yes, I think it’s possible to have genuine insights. This is an oversimplification of how insights manifest to actual concrete change. Insights are hypotheses for the most part. Believing in them without testing is risky. I write about these insights or the nature of insight.

Has anyone ever come out of these “profound” psychedelic trips with a verifiable scientific insight or breakthrough in physics or psychology or something? Can you fix Africa now? Why do these trip reports just read like Eckhart Tolle Burning man Deepak Chopramaxxed guruslop

This was the most profound experience of my life. I am stunned beyond comprehension. This molecule is without peer. The 27mg dose opened up what felt like pure consciousness and intelligence. A majestic reveal of existence itself. In all its incomprehensible glory and majesty. It is impossible to explain with words. Whatever you imagine, multiply it by 1,000 and then add infinite width and depth and dimensions. But entrance was not granted without prerequisite. Existence demanded that I submit. That I say yes; without attachment and without condition. Yes to existence; yes to the dissolution of self; yes to release control; yes, to all. My ego registered the ask and panicked. It wanted control. It was desperate for control. It pleaded to escape from the torrent of light and essence that threatened to rip my sanity into chards. The urge to eject was overwhelming. Terror thundered throughout my mind and body. It took everything within me to release. I overcame and was treated with bliss that defies imagination. A euphoria colored with perfect harmony of all things. An orchestra of essence washed over me and swept me up in dance. It was home. The highest aspiration of intelligent life. For some reason, stored and tucked away as the ultimate prize. A single concept emerged in omnipresence: we cannot grok the preciousness of our existence. Yet it is everything we’ve ever wanted and more. The state we long for without knowing it exists. This caused me great pain and heartache. A swell of loyalty and devotion emerged inside me, pledging allegiance to existence. To become a warrior and caretaker of life on earth. To protect at any cost the candle of consciousness that has miraculously emerged in this part of the galaxy. What awaits will wipe all your tears, soothe all your sorrows, and infinitely exceed your wants.

@puheenix @9chabard So if qualia is separate from intelligence, what specific types of brain damage do you think would cause humans to become p zombies but retain complete intelligence and be indistinguishable? Alternatively, why would we evolve to have intelligence and qualia be inseparable?

@9chabard i heard a very solid though not watertight case for that exact argument & felt very compelled that no digital device would ever have consciousness, tldr it’s too discontinuous as a state-updating machine to sustain a sense of qualia

Do psychedelics feel like psychosis? According to people with experience with both states, for the most part, not really. At least for our participants in general, cannabis felt substantially more like psychosis. link.springer.com/article/10.100…

@Plinz You can compare it to the use of painkilling effects. You can use this to enable you to face the pain of collapsing even harder or you can use it to face the pain of growing or expanding. You can offload cognition to surpass your capacity.

I deeply agree with Emily Bender's main point: LLMs are useless, unless you want to offload cognition. (The other two usecases she suggests are rare special cases of the third.) Offloading cognition into machines has always been the purpose and application of computer science and AI.

@allTheYud It is awareness specifically. The culture evolved to some set of beliefs. The knowledge pool rapidly becomes a new ecosystem for which our culture was not adapted to. We would have to solve the many problems we are now aware of to reach homeostasis and peace again.

It looks to me like telegrams were the optimal level of social communication technology, and society began to disintegrate after voice radio was invented, though not to the same extent as it began to collapse after television.
