During the Spanish Civil War and the famine years that followed, one animal helped keep families and orphanages alive -- the Spanish Giant rabbit. Today, the breed is on the verge of extinction. At the Convent of St. Anthony of Padua in central Spain, a group of cloistered Franciscan nuns led by Sister Consuelo Peset Laudeña are fighting to save it. "Many families have managed to get by thanks to this animal, and now it seems we are forgetting that part of our history." Sr. Consuelo, who trained as a veterinary assistant, began raising the rabbits more than 30 years ago, originally for food, after her parents gave her a pair. The breed is a cross between the Flanders Giant and Spanish greyhound-type females, and can weigh up to 20 pounds. A decade ago, she sent photos to a conservation association and learned the species was endangered. "They told me, 'You have a spectacular animal, and it's endangered,'" she recalled -- and the community pivoted to conservation. The sisters obtained permits, set up a small farm, and built a breeding system where each animal has a microchip, a pedigree, and a feeding log to prevent inbreeding. Of the 11 sisters in the cloistered community, three are dedicated to caring for the farm. By the end of March, 90 young had been recorded. Their permit only allows breeding for personal consumption, not sales, so to promote conservation the sisters have donated the rabbits to schools, a theme park in Toledo, and registered private breeders. Sr. Consuelo says the work aligns with Pope Francis's call in his 2015 encyclical Laudato Si', encouraging Catholics and people of goodwill to care for the environment. "We have to protect creation," she said. "We are Franciscans. St. Francis is the patron saint of veterinarians, and that is the source of the love and admiration we feel for the Spanish giant rabbit." © A Mighty Girl #archaeohistories
