We are berry excited to celebrate #PiDay! In 1926, Julia Twohey invented a sheet metal pie plate with a gutter to catch the juices of berries that overflow during baking. The gutter was designed to be shallow so heat could contact the wall for a thorough bake.

Another good habit -- Using the info shown on Private PAIR (for, e.g., examiner, art unit, confirmation no., etc.) in correspondence with the Patent Office. The info printed on the Office's previous correspondence can be outdated, so best to use PAIR or Patent Center info.

Two valuable patent practitioner habits: 1) Always checking the current @uspto fee schedule before paying fees -- uspto.gov/learning-and-r… 2) Always downloading and using the latest & greatest USPTO forms -- uspto.gov/patents/apply/…

A key takeaway -- "the pendency between issue fee payment and grant of the patent is expected to be substantially reduced." This article rightly discusses this in detail as the first of its "Practical Considerations."

PSA -- scammers have been working overtime, apparently. Been hearing a lot from clients and colleagues regarding imposter emails and physical mailings. Great rule of thumb -- send any and all correspondence re patents/trademarks to your friendly IP counsel for verification.

A little late to this party, but the "rocket docket" design patent application filings are pretty great. However, if practitioners are not outsourcing the "preexamination search" portion, I suspect a few may eventually regret that decision.

@MichaelBielski A patent is not a business plan. I try to emphasize this in most of my consults. Considering the cost to obtain a patent (let alone enforce it), it's critical to know where the patent fits into your business.

They say less than 5% of all patents are commercialized. I get it that some patents are just not commercially viable, but that efficiency is terrible. I think inventors need to spend as much time on the business side of things as they do on the patenting side.
