Today Presbyterian churches are not united doctrinally, practically, morally. There are clusters of Presbyterian churches, or a spectrum, but we cannot assume that a Presbyterian church will have a significant commitment to the Westminster Confession or to Scripture or to Christian morality. The Anglican communion worldwide is all over the place, with new continuing Anglican churches springing up all over the place. Dittos for every other Protestant denomination. The result is that in terms of belief, practice, and ethics, Protestants have more in common with churches that are outside our denominational worlds than we do with churches that are within. In terms of women’s ordination, the PCA, OPC, and CREC have more in common with Orthodox and Catholics and conservative Lutherans than with virtually any other Presbyterian body. The same is true on a wide range of other issues: Abortion, same-sex marriage, and other issues concerning sexuality. Even where we traditionally differ from Catholics, we are sometimes closer to them than to other Protestants. We have more in common with Catholics in our understand of Scriptural authority than we do with liberal Protestants. God's reshuffled the deck. How then shall we live?
