What's the best piece of coaching advice you've ever been given?

@TheS_Resource "Plan meticulously for your sessions to be chaotic. Explain your game/drill within 30secs. If you can't, you've not prepared well enough, or it's too advanced"

@TheS_Resource The same question as when they had a good game. "What about your decision making led to today's performance?"

@TheS_Resource Love that! Kids teach us how to enjoy it. All too often it's the "coaches" that complicate things. Just let them play.

I went to watch a U10 grassroots game last night. No affiliation, just there to support one player and what I saw… • Two teams. • Mixed ability across both. • Some players were already in academies. • Others just starting out. Both coaches rotated players, everyone played, and every single child had a role. • No constant shouting. • No over-instruction. Just: “Well done for trying that.” “Great dribble.” “Did you see your teammate?” One team had stronger players, and that coach didn’t just use it for his advantage, he challenged those players with: • Different positions. • Individual targets. The game stayed competitive, not because of ability or lack of effort, but because of how it was managed. One moment that stayed with me was a player called Jack. He was recently new to the team and also new to playing football. Every touch he had there was genuine encouragement, patience and support from his team-mates. Misplaced pass? “Unlucky, Jack.” High fives. A corner that led to a goal? “WELL DONE JACK!” Celebrating like he’d scored it himself. By the end of the game, he wasn’t “the new player.” He most probably felt part of it. I can only imagine how he felt walking away from that pitch, probably ten feet tall. That’s the point every child played, every player contributed, and everyone mattered. • Two volunteer coaches. • Straight from work. Both created a fun, inclusive, competitive and enjoyable environment for all, including the parents. Kudos 👏👏 Game: Llanrug v Bangor Saints

@TheS_Resource I always say, keep your enthusiasm and love for coaching and work like a person possessed on your delivery before worrying about technicals. Rather to transfer the little you know expertly, than be an expert without the transfer.

@Don_K_Williams @TheS_Resource @Nick_Buonocore Not in favour of this as there's no one size fits all. Some kids perform better when parents present, others don't. If as a coach you're not comfortable with the difficult questions then that's a coaching issue, not a parent/player one.

@TheS_Resource 2/ coaching is a long process. I'm not sure how 1 person can take sole credit, even if you coach alone, they play other sports, have a ton of access to material, even learn from games(XB/PS).

@TheS_Resource 1/ I like this question and have been lurking waiting for an answer. I coach at grassroots, so for me the recognition is not important to my reputation. So I can honestly say I'm over the moon if someone recognises something worth praising. Irrespective if who gets it.

When another coach gets the recognition from parents that you felt you'd earned, what's your honest internal reaction? Genuine pleasure for them, a quiet sting, or something more complicated than either?

@power_ray My brother and his SiLaw can barely kick a ball but scream and shout at the TV. My brother is shocked his grandson has no interest in playing. I said do you blame him when he sees how you 2 idiots behave to a mistake? He may like f/ball, but he doesn't fancy your reactions.

@TheS_Resource 3/ if I were to agree to this amount I doing so on the assumption my standards are adopted? And does everyone else feel the same? I don't see it working nor would I be in favour of it at all.

Unpopular opinion: every grassroots club should expect random visits from the National Governing Body (NGB). Not for paperwork, badges or for tick boxes. For what actually happens: • Training sessions. • Matchdays. • Touchlines. Most environments look very different when someone’s watching. We say development matters, but what often gets rewarded? • Winning at all costs • Selection. • Short-term results. So behaviour follows, less game time for some, more pressure on others and adults louder than the players. It’s all accepted because no one ever sees it. Courses don’t change environments, standards do, and standards only matter when they’re visible. Right now, most clubs are only accountable to themselves. That’s not accountability, it's more comfort. If you knew someone could turn up at any time and watch everything as it is… What would change? And more importantly, why isn’t it already like that?

@JPSoccerCoach @power_ray @SoccerCoachCast 2/ Football has become overwhelmed with negativity. Too many grassroots coaches feeling the need to be the all knowing oracle and smothering creativity. Teams are only as good as their coaches, NEVER reaching potential. I watched an u10 coach doing a white board session. Mad.
