dottore’s relationship with his parents (or lack thereof) haunts me. was he an orphan? that could explain why he had no protection when he was being chased away with pitchforks & clubs. or were his parents frightened of their son too? did they also see him as a monster?

so while some of his colleagues have relationships outside of utility, he does not. he oscillates between the extremes of viewing himself as a monstrosity (see: x.com/nemohew/status…) unfit for human bonds versus relationships being a facade for benefits:

nahida’s tale in scara’s release patch recreates dottore’s memories of tatarasuna and tellingly begins the tale with [dottore’s pov]. what is depicted in that tale is a rare look into dottore’s unguarded thoughts, ones that showcase an internalization of that [monster] label:

in all likelihood…the answer is probably his family. the implication that dottore’s own family life entailed “discomfort” and needed him to “endure” is quite insightful. to dottore, family was a site of discomfort, a relationship in which he needed to provide a “benefit / use”
