Our hard-working volunteers enjoyed a beautiful sunny morning for our regular monthly gardening session today. Great to see several visits from a yellow Brimstone butterfly enjoying our nature-friendly historic churchyard!

@NTinBath It's mystifying you've spent a fortune interspersing the endless convoluted fencing there with multiple *closed* gates, even as you're telling people in Bathwick the gate from Bathwick Fields onto the busiest neighbouring road must be left wide open for accessibility reasons!

Goal reached: over 10,000 trees have now been planted on Bathampton Meadows 🙌 A big thank you to those who helped – community, schools, groups, staff, volunteers. This is a huge achievement that we'll get to experience for years to come Thanks Forest of Avon for funding trees

"The Death of Major Peirson 6 January 1781" by John Singleton Copley, 1783, is a tragically beautiful painting, in my opinion. This picture celebrates the British defense of Jersey against French invasion in 1781 and also pays tribute to twenty-four-year old Major Francis Peirson (in the center), who lost his life in the process. Originally a part of France, the island of Jersey had been in the possession of the English since 1066. On the night of 5–6 January 1781 a small army of French soldiers landed on the island and marched on the capital, St Helier. They captured the Governor, Moses Corbet, and forced him to sign a document of surrender. However, the British garrison and the Jersey militia launched a counter-attack, led by Major Peirson, during the course of which Peirson was killed by a French sniper. Almost immediately, Peirson's black servant, Pompey, turned on the sniper and shot him dead. A battle ensued in Royal Square and the French were defeated.
