I have been advising my patients about the importance of Vitamin D for their health. Because we are in lockdown and spending a lot of time indoors, Vitamin D levels can become low. Make sure you take Vitamin D supplements if you are not getting a lot of sun exposure.

Serum ferritin and bilirubin also increased (other studies) suggesting red cell breakdown. Anemia alone not enough to explain progressive hypoxia?

More detailed analysis of 54 hospitalized patients, out of which 28 had severe respiratory failure. Largely the same findings regarding IL-6 (and TNF-α), but more specific info on lymphopenia.

It is just a case report, but interfering with the cytokine storm, this time with an IL-6R antibody, is a mechanistically plausible way to stop the menace. We can only hope that protocols can’t prevent common sense application of this and similar tools. latimes.com/world-nation/s…

Mind-boggling mixed research on #hydrochloroquine. Same country #Brazil on one hand halts small study because drug causing 'potentially dangerous' heart issues, on the other has 'unique hospital' giving it to seniors (also at home!) with 'great success'. Dose the key? #COVID19

Smoking has some benefit for inflammatory conditions like ulcerative colitis. Since COVID-19 mortality seems to be caused by an inflammatory over-reaction, it might help in damping that down.

This is a surprising result. Smokers are far LESS likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 that non-smokers and it looks robust across countries. Why might this be?

Agriculturalists drained blood from animals, but added much salt (especially for preservation). I wonder if the lack of blood in a carnivorous diet is the reason we need so much salt.
