Female Footballer Assaulted by Team Manager, Rights Group Demands Action The Banjul-based rights group, the Edward Francis Small Centre for Rights and Justice (EFSCRJ$ has strongly condemned the alleged physical assault on a female footballer from Brikama United FC by the team’s manager, Madiba Singhateh, labeling it as gender-based violence requiring immediate action. The organization has called on the Gambia Police Force and the Gambia Football Federation (GFF) to pursue legal measures against Singhateh. It also urged women’s rights groups to ensure survivor protection and push for justice against the perpetrator. Additionally, EFSCRJ demanded that the GFF and the National Sports Council conduct a thorough review of sports associations and clubs to enforce high standards of player safety, particularly for women. They emphasized that clubs must adopt gender-sensitive and human rights-focused safeguards to protect athletes. Meanwhile, the Brikama Sports Committee has suspended the team manager pending investigations into an alleged incident that has sparked outrage among sports fans and feminists who are calling for the manager's arrest and prosecution.

Momodou Justice Darboe has been granted bail, backed by a Gambian surety and a bail bond of D25,000. He is required to appear at the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) in Banjul on Monday, September 30, 2024. On Thursday, September 26, the police arrested both Musa Sheriff and Momodou Darboe from The Voice Newspaper. While Musa Sheriff has since been released, Momodou Darboe faces charges of false publication and broadcasting, in violation of Section 181A of the Criminal Code of The Gambia. After spending more than 40 hours in detention, Darboe has been released. We will continue to provide updates as the situation develops.

I went to EFSTH Ndemban Clinic and I think of the million dalasi cars driven by some civil and government officials, I can conclude that many of us don’t love our country 😭 😭 So sad!
