I literally cannot name one thing that Great Britain does better than America

As a boy, I was at a boarding school very close to Parliament. I took the opportunity to go and watch the debates in both houses from the visitors' gallery; at that time it was not widely known that one could do this, so it was easy and quick to get in. I saw all the famous politicians of the 1970s. But what was self-evident, even to a teenager, was that whereas the elected members of parliament were out to score points in their speeches, before voting according to pre-set ideas, the hereditary Lords were genuinely issued in persuasion and had open minds. This was because, being hereditary, they were beholden to no-one and no party; ironically, they were much more representative of ordinary people with common sense than their political colleagues in the lower house.

I’d been waiting 25 minutes. Receptionist kept saying, “They’ll be with you shortly,” in that tone that suggests time is more of a suggestion than a fact. Finally, the interviewer walks in. No apology. No acknowledgment. Just sits down, flips open my CV, and goes, “So, why should we hire you?” Ah. We’re doing this. I smile. Professional. Start answering. Mid-sentence, they check their phone. Not discreetly. Not subtle. Full attention shift. So I stop talking. They don’t notice at first. Still scrolling. Still nodding like I’m background noise. Then they look up. “…sorry, go on.” And something in me just… clicks. Because suddenly this isn’t an interview. It’s a preview. So I close my folder. “Actually, I’m good.” They blink. “What?” “I think I’ve seen enough.” Now they’re confused. “This is an interview” “Yeah,” I nod, standing up, “and I’m no longer interested in the role.” Silence. For the first time since they walked in… they’re fully present. Straight posture. Eye contact. Processing. “You’re… withdrawing?” I smile. Calm. “Yeah. I’m looking for a place that’s as interested in me as I am in them.” And then I leave. No dramatic exit. No speech. Just walk out. The receptionist looks up as I pass, confused. And for once? So is the company.

Dear @CommonsSpeaker, Can we the people of this country place a small request on you, can you during the next sitting of Parliament actually run PMQs properly? For too long the PM, every single time he is asked a question relevant to his actions, his MPs actions and what is happening more widely in this country reverts to constant, and frequently vile insults and deflections, never actually answering the question asked. We do not need a history lesson, we remember the past, or comments on the actions of other parties or their leaders, or MPs, also frequently in the past. It is not @KemiBadenoch, @EdwardJDavey, @Nigel_Farage or @JohnSwinney Question Time, it is now down to Keir Starmer as current PM time to answer. Frankly, if he was still in court, he would be in jail for contempt, he is most certainly without doubt in contempt of Parliament. I am sure that @MariaBowtell, @orlaminihane, and @officialsammyuk will back me up when I say that Mr Lowe is easy to work with and respects and likes women.
