We didn't have local elections last year so this will be the first time I've voted for anything other than Green in a council election since I turned 18. I'll be 60 next month.

@BenDempsey18 @batboysagogo @fuckyouiquit It says she wanted help to get subbed out. I take it you've never done CPR. The guidelines are that one person should only do 2 minutes at a time before needing a change. The effectiveness reduces after this time. Trust me, been there many, many times.

A man lay dying, a CPR trained coworker asked their manager if he could help administer CPR and the manager said, “It has to be management or safety team. Please get back to work. Just turn around and not look. Let’s get back to work.” What the fuck is wrong with these people?

A worker died at an Amazon warehouse in Oregon last week. For more than an hour, workers in the facility were instructed to continue working as the man lay dead. One worker wanted to help, but a manager told them to “Just turn around and not look. Let’s get back to work," according to The Western Edge. Link: thewesternedge.media/p/everyone-is-….

What an incredibly immoral waste of resources. Peaceful protesters quietly holding signs expressing forbidden opinions of solidarity against genocide, arrested en-masse by this ridiculous force on behalf of a craven, pathetic government.
Metropolitan Police@metpoliceuk

523 people were arrested today for showing support for a proscribed organisation. The age of those arrested ranges from 18 to 87. That brings the updates today to a close, we are grateful to all the officers involved for their professionalism.

@Russell0123456 @ZoeJardiniere Can you seriously say PA are on a par with Isis? They've not killed anyone, nor would they. A small bit of criminal damage does not equal terrorism. Only a moron would think otherwise. That's the point of the protest, it's unjustifiably proscribed

@ZoeJardiniere Why do some people think they are above the law. PA is a proscribed terrorist group. If they think they are being oppressed they can always claim political asylum in a place like Iran

👀The Electoral Commission give Democracy Volunteers access to polling stations at election time. Only they and the police can go inside. They’ve just issued this report about “family voting” in Gorton and Denton: Democracy Volunteers deployed four accredited election observers across the Gorton and Denton Westminster Parliamentary By-election today. The team attended 22 of the 45 polling stations in the constituency, spending between 30 and 45 minutes in each. The observers worked in pairs using the international standard for election observation - the four eyes principle. Each team assessed several aspects of the polling process, from accessibility to issues around the integrity of the vote. Staff were welcoming to the team and we would like to thank them for their time in accommodating our work. The team assessed two significant aspects of electoral integrity - family voting (where two voters either confer, collude or direct each other on voting) which breaches the secret ballot. The team also assessed the impact of the requirement for voters to show ID before they are issued with a ballot paper. 2023 saw the enactment of the Ballot Secrecy Act, which made the practice of family voting more clearly a breach of the secret ballot, making it more enforceable by staff in polling stations. Signage is now available to discourage the practice. Signage was only seen in 45% of the polling stations observed. The observer team saw family voting in 15 of the 22 polling stations observed, some 32 cases in total, nine cases in one polling station alone. The team observed a sample of 545 voters casting their votes - meaning 12% of those voters observed either caused or were affected by family voting. Commenting John Ault, Director of Democracy Volunteers said; ‘Today we have seen concerningly high levels of family voting in Gorton and Denton. Based on our assessment of today’s observations, we have seen the highest levels of family voting at any election in our 10 year history of observing elections in the UK.’ ‘We rarely issue a report on the night of an election, but the data we have collected today on family voting, when compared to other recent by-elections, is extremely high.’ ‘In the other recent Westminster parliamentary by-election in Runcorn and Helsby we saw family voting in 12% of polling stations, affecting 1% of voters. In Gorton and Denton, we observed family voting in 68% of polling stations, affecting 12% of those voters observed.’ The team also observed cases of voters being turned away, however, in each case this was due to them not being a registered voter for Westminster elections, such as having EU citizenship, and only being allowed to vote in local elections. The team also saw a number of voters taking photographs of their ballot papers and one voter being authorised to vote despite them already having been marked as voted earlier in the day. Democracy Volunteers has informed elections staff at Manchester City Council about our findings today. This Statement is now available on the Democracy Volunteers website HERE. --

Democracy Volunteers explicitly states that there are **no strict age restrictions** beyond observers needing to be over 18 years old. They welcome participants "from all walks and stages of life" and emphasize that the diversity of their observers (including age) is one of their strengths. From their official FAQs and recruitment information: Minimum age: **18+**. No upper age limit or other age-based barriers (aside from non-membership in political parties). They actively recruit broadly, including encouraging applications from various sectors of society. They frequently mention working with university students and younger volunteers (e.g., collaborations with Manchester University students for election-related work, and eligibility for youth awards like Saltire Awards for ages 18-25 in some deployments). Their observer teams for UK elections often include students, and they highlight recruiting "new observers and students" on their site. In practice, their pool appears to include a mix: Younger participants. (students and early-career adults, often 18–30s), drawn to the civic/academic appeal.

Did you? Democracy Volunteers is a UK-based, non-partisan, volunteer-led election observation organization founded in 2015 (celebrating its 10th anniversary around 2025). It describes itself as the leading domestic election observation group in the UK and one of the leading ones in Western Europe. Their mission focuses on improving the quality, security, and accessibility of democratic elections by observing polling processes, collecting empirical data (often using international standards like those from OSCE/ODIHR), reporting findings statistically, and advising election administrators, legislators, the UK's Electoral Commission, returning officers, and government bodies to enhance elections for voters. They deploy volunteer observers to monitor UK elections (general, by-elections, local, etc.) and occasionally abroad (e.g., US midterms or presidential races). In the UK, they have observed hundreds of thousands of voters across thousands of polling stations over the years, including major deployments like covering over 200 constituencies in the 2024 general election. They receive funding/support from sources like the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust (a reform-oriented charitable trust) and emphasize independence and non-partisanship—observers cannot be members of UK political parties. The Electoral Commission grants them accreditation, allowing their observers access to polling stations and counting venues—something generally restricted (only accredited observers like them, plus police and certain officials, can enter polling areas in that capacity). Their observers are registered with the Electoral Commission for deployments, wear accreditation badges when working, and follow formal observation protocols (e.g., working in pairs under the "four eyes" principle for impartiality). Major UK media (BBC, Guardian, Independent, Sky News) and parliamentary committees routinely cite their reports and refer to them as credible election observers or an "official election observer group" in coverage. They submit evidence to parliamentary inquiries (e.g., on the 2024 general election) and have influenced reforms like aspects of the Ballot Secrecy Act 2023. In short: They're a respected, independent, accredited domestic observer group with formal permissions and recognition from the Electoral Commission, but they are a civil society/non-profit initiative rather than a state-run "official" entity like the Commission itself. Their findings (such as on "family voting" in recent by-elections) are taken seriously.
