I always felt this was going to be an uphill battle. The Beavs will find out their fate tomorrow on Selection Monday. Right now, I’m leaning toward Eugene, but I could also see West Virginia or Nebraska as possibilities. #OnDeck

Put together some numbers comparing the pitching and defensive metrics from the 2025 and 2026 clubs after seeing comments that this year’s group is “leaps and bounds” better. The cumulative team stats are listed below. Walks were up and more runs were allowed in 2025, while strikeouts are higher in 2026, but I also think a large part of that can be attributed to a tougher overall schedule and some more road games last season. Outside of that, a lot of the numbers are actually pretty comparable. Make no mistake, the 2026 team is absolutely elite on the mound and defensively. But I’d also put the 2025 club in that same elite category, with the added bonus of being very good offensively as well. #OnDeck 2026 (55 games) WHIP: 1.15 ERA: 3.27 Runs: 206 Walks: 185 Strikeouts: 646 Fielding %: .985 2025 (65 games) WHIP: 1.34 ERA: 4.18 Runs: 302 Walks: 270 Strikeouts: 676 Fielding %: .980

@stephenvbird We have been seeded much lower than our rankings in the past. It’s not a unheard of situation.

@BeavsOnDeck It will be up to the committee to take into account that OSU was denied the opportunities of being in a conference. Those developing the rankings have them at 7 in spite of their schedule or how RPI ranks them.

The Beavs are in do-or-die territory today. There’s still a very outside shot at hosting with a win, but the margin for error is gone. In the RPI era, no school has ever hosted a regional with more than five Q4 losses. This feels like a true must-win game. So far it’s going Oregon State’s way. Tomorrow it’s time to cross your fingers and wait for Selection Monday. #OnDeck

@BeavsOnDeck At the same time when you compare ERA, K/9 innings, saves, fielding % you also see great difference. So which do you think wins games great offense or pitching and defense.

Comparing the last two years of offensive production paints the picture of two very different teams. At the end of the day, walks and extra-base hits will always reign supreme in college baseball. @dwightjaynes I’m merely comparing the last two seasons to show the offensive statistical red flags of this year’s team. Last year’s team walked a considerable amount and had a lot of extra base hits. This year’s team doesn’t do that.

Comparing apples to oranges. Big difference in the caliber of pitching and defense they faced in those seasons.

The post was purely about offensive output. I’m not disagreeing that we are good in other categories. I’m stating that this is an average offense at best with some statistical red flags. The killshot ratio does not point towards offensive output of a lineup rather just scoring 2+ runs in an inning and than not giving up a run on defense. @PEARatings does great work!

@BeavsOnDeck I can agree with that. One metric interesting was pointed out by @PEARatings, the killshot metric. Though our batting is above average, what has won games is how they group together. So for a full picture this might need to be taken into account x.com/i/status/20542…

I don’t disagree with that at all. Elite pitching and defense can absolutely carry a team, especially in college baseball. My point was more about projecting postseason ceiling and overall offensive output like I stated above. The offense has been solid, but some of the underlying metrics and strength of schedule raise fair questions compared to previous host-level teams. If the pitching staff continues to dominate, though, it may not matter.

@BeavsOnDeck This is only focusing on one metric and not the full measure of an elite team. The team only needs to score more than the other team. If defense and pitching limits the other team to <4 runs, an above average offense can still create an elite team

@BlickieMartin I agree. However, the numbers are the numbers. I’m not discounting how hard it is to be a premier program as an independent

Oregon State has only played two teams currently inside the Top 100 of the RPI in weekend series play this season, and neither opponent is inside the Top 50. For comparison, the 2025 club faced four Top 50 RPI teams and six Top 100 teams in weekend series action. The strength of schedule difference between the two seasons is significant. #OnDeck
