The compromise: the Agong could delay a bill once, but Parliament could re-pass it and it would become law regardless. Emergency powers stayed formally with the Agong. ✓1993 crisis The sharper one. Trigger: the Sultan of Johor (Sultan Iskandar) allegedly assaulted a hockey coach, Douglas Gomez, after his son was suspended for assaulting a goalkeeper. Mahathir seized the moment: Parliament stripped the rulers' legal immunity for personal conduct, created the Special Court to try them, and removed their power to pardon themselves and their families. The mainstream press ran weeks of exposés on royal excesses ~ land deals, logging concessions, unpaid debts ;a clearly coordinated campaign to soften public opinion before the vote. A follow-up in 1994 further curtailed royal assent at both federal and state levels. Net effect: Mahathir converted the monarchy from a veto player into a largely ceremonial institution on paper.
