A huge thank you to the brilliant Sarah Crossan and the inimitable Ms Arduino for a superb lunchtime Q&A celebrating creativity, resilience and our students’ prize-winning poems. Well done to all students & to our peerless host, librarian Ms Evans. @BedesHead @SarahCrossan

If you’ve followed me for a while you’ll know I’ve been banging this drum for years. Libraries are statutory in prisons (rightly) and not in schools (very, very wrongly). This takes a minute to sign, but countless lives could be changed - please spare it a moment of your time xxx
SF Said@whatSFSaid

If you would like to see a library & a librarian in every school, for every child - please sign & share this petition to make them a statutory requirement! petition.parliament.uk/petitions/6342…

Telling lies about what was being taught in sex ed in schools was one of the ways section 28 started. Eagerly enabled by the Mail / Telegraph / Sun, of course. We cannot let these dreadful people, who want kids to live in shame, fear and ignorance, do this again.
Mikey Smith@mikeysmith

So there's been a series of PMQs questions complaining about 'extreme' sex education in schools. These seem to have been kicked off a think tank founded by Tories Miriam Cates and Danny Kruger. You will be STUNNED to learn they're not quite as advertised. Thread:

I can finally announce that I've been collaborating on a dark YA illustrated tale for @TwoHootsBooks, with illustrations provided by the brilliant Emily Gravett! Island of Whispers will be published this autumn, and it's looking very, very pretty...
The Bookseller@thebookseller

.@TwoHootsBooks has signed Island of Whispers, a "compelling" YA gothic fairytale by @FrancesHardinge with "atmospheric" illustrations by Emily Gravett. Read here: buff.ly/3l0b8QV

Lovely to welcome Lisa Heathfield to ‘Brilliant Books & Biscuits’ to discuss our shared text for February - ‘I am Not A Number’. There’s nothing like hearing about the creative process from a writer, especially one as fascinating as @LisaHeathfield. @bedesnews @BedesLibrary

Throughout February, we will share resources via our PSHE website to encourage pupils to talk about the bigger picture of LGBT+ experience, in which LGBT+ people were the agents of change. This year, the theme is #BehindTheLens, celebrating LGBT+ peoples’ contribution to cinema.

To find out why my first priority as a new Head was to restore a library at the heart of our school- and why libraries are more important now than ever before - have a read of my latest blog post: petermiddleton.blog/2023/01/11/a-n…

We call them children's books, but really, they're books written for an audience that includes children, but excludes no-one - and you can never, ever be too old to read them! I wrote about some of my all-time favourites in this piece for @Foyles : foyles.co.uk/SF-Said-Blog

Children's books are the cornerstone of our culture. They're the books that make us readers & shape us in the deepest ways. Even if the media ignore them, we all know how vital they are. So THANK YOU to everyone who's been sharing, celebrating & championing children's books!
