Damaged critical undersea infrastructure power cables linking Finland and Estonia show us the increasing frequency of cable disruptions in the Baltic Sea.   It no longer seems like a coincidence.   Protecting maritime infrastructure must be raised both at the #NATO level and bilaterally as a key priority in Baltic Sea cooperation.

Russia invested $10 bn to build its ‘shadow fleet’ apparently not just to escape sanctions. Too many coincidences with severed communications and electrical cables. We have not ‘to seek cooperation’ in checking certain ships, but simply to ban their activities in the Baltic Sea.

The growing number of undersea incidents in the Baltic Sea, affecting critical infrastructure, should serve as a stark& urgent warning to both #NATO& #EU. In light of recent risks posed by third-country vessels& particularly shadow fleet, it’s imperative that we significantly enhance the protection of critical infrastructure in the Baltic sea to minimise vulnerabilities. All mechanisms within #NATO, international& regional security formats must be enabled. The upgrade of navigation rules in shallow seas must also be on the table.

The first HIMARS systems are set to arrive in Lithuania next year & we are eagerly preparing for their delivery. Our troops are currently exercising in Germany to operate HIMARS effectively & work alongside other units, training in close cooperation with US forces. 📸@LTU_Army
